bay area. one of the areas of concern in the years past has been the grape harvest. nbc bay area's bob redell live in livermore. is the smoke a concern for winemakers this year as well, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. in the long term, yes for sure but not right now because those wildfires are now encroaching on the bay area. in about 30 minutes local religious leaders are going to bless the grapes here in livermore. this is an annual tradition to kick off the annual livermore valley wine harvest, which began this morning. this is video from several hours ago. overnight in the vineyards where we watched workers harvest, pick about five tons of grapes. this is a white varietal from portugal. the winemaker is excited about it this year because the weather has been mild here, not much in the way of heat waves. this is what the livermore valley wine harvest looked like last year. lots of smoke from the scu fire that was burning thousands of acres south of livermore which can lead to smoke permeating the grapes and ruining the taste of the wine. not much of that

i want to take you up to see from the sky nbc bay area sky ranger over the scene of that repair area. we now know 325 homes and businesses in that ten-block area have been under evacuation order since 10:00, yesterday morning when pg&e says a contractor broke those gas lines. pg&e decided not to add another 15 homes to that evacuation order as they were considering this morning, but we know that the folks who live and work in the area will not be able to return until at least early this evening. and 40 to 50 of those homes won't have any gas service until each one is checked one by one by firefighters. >> yeah. so there were multiple gas lines involved in the area that -- that the damage occurred, so pg&e is working through securing a number of different lines that are right in that general area, so it's been a pretty complex operation for them. >> all right. so to repeat what we know. the evacuation order is now extended at least early this evening at the earliest. the intersection at ray street and park avenue where the initial breaks were reported will be closed to drivers indefini

nbc bay area news. >> thank you so much, melissa, for that update. now, with all the smoke over the caldor fire, it's affecting our air quality right now and we are going to find out where the smoke is blowing. jeff jeff joins us and you are tracking it all. >> yeah, you can see on this map of the smoke today, the smoke plumes off to the north and east of us. and the way the weather pattern's setting up. it's blowing the thickest, most harmful smoke off to the north and also to the east. so, right here across the bay your area, we are left with some haze and then right here the fog at the coastline. so at this point, it is okay to be outside. we have moderate air quality through the north bay, coast, bay, east bay, and for the south bay. let's take you into the smoke forecast for tonight and i do think we have the chance of a little bit of smoke pushing in just north of napa. also, closer to fair field. but the majority of the bay area's in this blue color, which is the haze and that's what we will continue in as we roll through tomorrow morning. we

one of the bay area's biggest school districts moving forward heading back to the classroom amid covid-19 concerns. >> and it's a district where a mask mandate is still parking outrage. nbc bay area's bob redell is live for us in san ramon. what are the parents telling you? >> reporter: most of the people who showed up at iron horse middle school, i'm talking about the parents and students were masked today as is mandated by this school district. some of the parents are upset about this mandate, but as i was alluding to, those parents seemed to be in the minority. every student i saw arriving here this morning was masked. and there were a lot of kids returning for in-person instruction of the 1,050 kids at this school, only 30 have chosen distance learning. districtwide, only 800 of the 30,000 students are staying home. so you can see the majority are coming back on campus. now, the district and many other districts throughout the bay area are requiring students to wear masks indoors in accordance with guidelines from the state and county regardless of their vaccination status. you can see that in video that we shot in one of the classrooms this morning. vaccinated peopl

a bay area man is sharing his story of battling the delta variant. >> he was fully vaccinated when he got the virus. nbcy area has more. >> reporter: this is 33-year-old moby, making an almost breathless plea. >> no joke. wear a mask. please. >> reporter: as his health began to deteriorate last month, a week after getting covid-19. >> i couldn't take a deep breath. my, i could just feel like my lungs and my back hurt really bad. i had a cough, i had a high fever, body aches, chills, pretty much the whole list. >> reporter: mauricio went to the hospital and was quickly diagnosed and admitted with covid pneumonia. he was healthy, young and fully-vaccinated and now one of many dealing with the delta variant. >> i had a really high fever, and they admitted me right away, isolated me, and i was there for two days. and then was able to leave. >> reporter: he attributes his quick recovery to one specific thing, getting vaccinated back in may. >> my emergency room doctor said if i hadn't been vaccinated my symptoms would have been far worse or my outcome would have been far worse than what it was. >> reporter:

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. we begin this week with a favorite vacation spot for the bay area. a lot of prayers at this hour that south lake tahoe avoids major damage. the entire south lake tahoe basin is under evacuation orders. let's take you out to a live chopper video now of the caldor fire. one final ridge stands behind this fire and the entire south lake tahoe region. you can see sun setting near the sierra. the fire continues to burn along highway 50. homes, businesses and other structures are gone. this is a shot near the homes at sierra at tahoe resort. some are gone while others have been saved. and that kind of hopscotching the of the fire line, we've seen this kind of behavior in the prior years. about 20,000 people were told to leave today. here's the latest evacuation map, it includes all the communities up to the nevada state line. if you want to explore this map further, we've posted it on our website. with highway 50 closed in terms of westbound, the main route was highway 50 eastbound. major roa

this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. world history is playing out as we speak. afghanistan is 7,000 miles away, but there's a deep connection here in the bay area. fremont, as you might know, is one of the biggest afghan populations in the united states. this 20-year war is now ending how it began, with the taliban in control. the taliban is an islamist military organization. tonight we are seeing the fall of afghanistan. people fleeing, worried that their lives are in jeopardy under the hard-line taliban rules, especially women and people who supported the outgoing afghan government. this is a scene that's reminiscent of the fall of saigon in 1975. hundreds of people at the airport in kabul trying to leave the country. that's a u.s. air force plane there, some grabbing the outside of the plane and others. the president of achx afghanistan has fled already. president biden stood firmly in his decision to withdraw the remaining troops from afghanistan, but he admitted the government's fall has happened a lot quicker than his administration anticipated. >> i will n

let's bring in nbc bay area's ian cull in dublin, one of the hot spots or gray spots in the bay area, where parents and schools are stuck. really it's a catch-22, even. >> reporter: yeah, it really is, raj. they're all paying attention to these hazy skies. we've seen the smoke settle in in the tri-valley. expected to go up and reach that unhealthy for sensitive groups. the question a lot of parents and schools are asking, when do the protocols change? after the fires in 2018 the state put out air safety guidelines. when the air quality index hits level 4 meaning the the aqi is roughly between 150 and 200, all activities should be moved indoors as much as reasonably possible. the pandemic protocols advise schools to circulate air as much as possible and maximize outdoor activity. the dublin school district like many others says it's prepared because of the changes it made during the lockdown zblb the good thing is from a covid standpoint we've upgraded the air filtration systems across the district, so we're comfortable having the windows closed even with covid. >> ian, while we have y
