we start, though, with rob nelson live in washington. hey, rob? >> reporter: hey, good morning, lori. you can tell from the crowd gathered at the airport and at the vatican embassy in d.c. that his visit has generated so much excitement in d.c. today pope francis will get a massive welcome, complete with a red carpet. take a look at these pictures, give you a sense of what is this is a podium set up on the south lawn of the white house. that's where the official place. an estimated 15,000 people are expected to attend the event making it one of if not the largest event held on the south lawn. the preparations don't stop there. this is a look inside the cabinet room of the white house where vatican flag now stands as yet another welcoming gesture for the pope. vatican officials are set to meet with the room with secretary of state john kerry. one of the events will be when he celebrates mass at the basilica at catholic university. that event is expected to draw 25,000 people and be the first mass celebrated by the pope in the u.s. because d.c. is a

i want to bring in sergeant jd nelson with the sheriffs office. you tell me this began with a carjacking in oakland just after 2:00 this morning. what happened after that? >> we got a report from the oakland police department that they were in pursuit of a carjacking vehicle. that car was found on the eastbound or the westbound lanes of 580 facing the eastbound direction. shortly thereafter we got a call of a carjacking. that peshwas unsuccessful in that -- that person was unsuccessful in taking that car. and then we got a call that a person was walking on 238. he was in a red hoody. that suspect fired at the california highway patrol officers and also struck a passing motorist. that suspect then took off running off the freeway where he was encountered by sheriffs deputies at this location and the deputies got into a shootout with that suspect and the suspect was ultimately killed. >> none of the deputies were hurt. >> none of the deputies were hurt. >> reporter: i'm not sure you mentioned this but there was a shooting, shots fired on the freeway
