i want to bring in sergeant jd nelson with the sheriffs office. you tell me this began with a carjacking in oakland just after 2:00 this morning. what happened after that? >> we got a report from the oakland police department that they were in pursuit of a carjacking vehicle. that car was found on the eastbound or the westbound lanes of 580 facing the eastbound direction. shortly thereafter we got a call of a carjacking. that peshwas unsuccessful in that -- that person was unsuccessful in taking that car. and then we got a call that a person was walking on 238. he was in a red hoody. that suspect fired at the california highway patrol officers and also struck a passing motorist. that suspect then took off running off the freeway where he was encountered by sheriffs deputies at this location and the deputies got into a shootout with that suspect and the suspect was ultimately killed. >> none of the deputies were hurt. >> none of the deputies were hurt. >> reporter: i'm not sure you mentioned this but there was a shooting, shots fired on the freeway
