there it is, a place for us to gather as nert members and there's our nert ics area. here is our structure. same kind of set up, sort of our version. command policy section, the planning group, they are up on top. then once things get rolling, you have your operations section, logistics section. here are our objectives on the nert team, figure out if it's big, if it's small, how do we keep track of what's going on? do we just remember it? are we going to rely on our computers, our pc's? no, we have to write it down the old-fashioned way. address, is there a fire, yes or no, damage, are there people injured, dead, can you get there. where, what, any sort of damage, are there people involved, can you get to it? here is a nert status sheet. basically if you send somebody out, you want to send the members' names, what time they went out, when they came back, what the assignment was, any comments, and if you have an incident number that would be nice. who is the safety person? we don't want to send people out, just hey, go do this. we want to keep track of it. if they don'

here is a nert status sheet. basically if you send somebody out, you want to send the members' names, what time they went out, when they came back, what the assignment was, any comments, and if you have an incident number that would be nice. who is the safety person? we don't want to send people out, just hey, go do this. we want to keep track of it. if they don't come back within a couple hours we have to send somebody to find them or at least checkup on them. if we don't know where they went and who they are, you have chaos. they might be hurt and they're going to stay hurt. we're going to roll on to disaster psychology. what does that mean? when people go through a disaster, their lives are wrecked. i saw this firsthand, i went down to help out with katrina thing in september. it's weird. because you are dealing with people that lost everything and it's kind of hard to imagine that if you haven't done it yourself. basically, you know, she's looking at her curtains here, she probably hand-stitched those things.

so we didn't have to spend any time, you know, nert being mad at city hall and people saying, why don't those people like us? i say bunker mentality is the number one enemy of the e.o.c.'s so the way you can avoid that and open it up -- so the third thing we did is we established a network of communication using the business community and the leadership structure, the chamber of commerce, the downtown association to purble the information back out and also to get feedback in. so we understood what were the big things that people needed. then, we had to build an ad hoc organization and another thing about disasters is they're bigger by definition something you can manage. it's not manageable. that's why it's a disaster, right? if it was manageable, it wouldn't be a disaster, it would be an incident, right? so we had about 15 or 20 people that i brought out of city hall, just picked people i kind of thought would be good at thinking on their feet and didn't need to read a book to now what the rules were. so we brought them and then we used hundreds of volunteers to support that. and the b

i am proud to say that our nert program as part of the certificate programs in the bay area has been an open dialogue with each other. we know core, we know panda. we know the people at berkeley. we continue to learn. i think we have already had this whole community approach since 1989 and we just continue to grow it. which brings me to my biggest question which is that we have reached 20,000 people in san francisco through word of mouth. 20,000 people is an excellent force multiplier but when you look at a population that grows to more than a million during the day, when you have tourists and schools and people visits who don't know what to do, it's not going to be enough. how do we reach more people to get them into nert training, give them the incentives to get them out of their house into training classes? can we require this of businesses, require it as schools, require it as institutions and give them a payback for it? can we give them insurance reductions? can we give them tax breaks? can we give small businesses rebates? if people are trained and certified in nert and stay ac

nert is part of it. if you think of a hotel as a small city in and of itself, if you have have an emergency response team and find people to be prepared has helped us. as has been mentioned, we have trained in partnership with the fire department, our hotels have hosted the trainings that have resulted in over 400 people being trained. we do feel like there's still things we need to work on. one -- communications, while they've improved, we still need to do more. i think that's the key message i'd like to leave is that i don't think there's ever a point we'll be completely prepared. we're always going to have new people come into the district. we are always going to have visitors. how can we stay on top of it, using social media, p.d.a.'s? one of the things we did is pull together all the different property owners, all the security teams within the properties and where he published a list for all of our employees and for all of our businesses. it's a business card that actually opens up and it has all th

that's an nert volunteer. never fight a fire if it's a large fire. large is over your head. if you are scared and it's too big, it's too large for you. if it's spread beyond where it started and blocking our escape route and you are unsure how to use an extinguisher. there are 4 types of fire it's on the label. on the front. down here. water type extinguisher it's a chrome big thing that holds 2-1/2 gallons of water. 30-40 feet away is the maximum, you want to get closer. flood it with water you can put your thumb over the tip and it fans it out. dry chemicals, inside here this is a bc this is one you might have in your car. it's not used on wood, paper, classic fires only on flammable liquid and electrical fires that's what you use in your car. if will have a pressure gauge. metal handle and it will have a good sized rubber nozzle and the label and all that will tell you the fire it's for. pass, pull the pin out. aim the nozzle. squeeze the lever. don't squeeze it and class 6 this happens. don't shoot the instructor in the foot because when you hold it, hold it here and don
