dana nessel, says this is illegal. you are targeting mostly black registered voters to dump all this information on them to try to stop them vote by mail. you may think it is cute but it is illegal in the state and we are coming for you. today they made good on that threat. tonight michigan state's general nessel announced felony charges whose names were listed a the beginning of that robocall. they denied of having anything to do with this call. it should be noted callers also got caller id messages saying the calls were coming from one of the two men's phone numbers. these guys are trump's supporters with a history of making flamboyant claims. these guys were referred to the fbi after these guys have offered them money to make up sexually assault allegations to robert mueller. they referred them to the fbi. i wonder what happened with the fbi referral. these gentlemen fabricated sexually assault allegations with pete buttigieg. that allegation fell apart when the person they put forward to make those charges to pete

joining us now is dana nessel, attorney general for the state of michigan. madam attorney general, i did not expect to be speaking to you again this soon and on this topic, but this is just a remarkable operation that you and your colleagues unveiled today. thank you for making time to be here. >> yeah, thanks for having me again. >> can you tell us about the joint nature of this operation? it's been an interesting thing to follow over the course of the day, as we sort of teased out what this really is. it's so scary on the front, on its face. but we've got six people charged federally. we've got seven people charged at the state level. it appears to be that these groups were engaged in sort of separate but related activities? >> well, these groups were working together, but you know, for some of them, federal charges seemed more appropriate, and for others, state charges were actually more suitable. but i do want to really reach out and thank the federal authorities, thank the fbi, and also the u.s. attorneys of both the eastern and western districts of mic

let's get more of those answers, joining me is michigan's attorney general dana nessel. thank you very much for being with us. how imminent was this threat? >> well, we were obviously concerned that these activities could take place at any time and my perspective is this. i would rather have a weak conspiracy case than the strongest homicide case. but that being the case, of course, we think we had substantial evidence in this case. we are not just talking about a bunch of guys sitting around and talking about something. we are talking about a number of overt actions moving towards these actual plots and not just the ones that you have talked about, of course, involving kidnapping the governor and other potential plots as well, taking over and potentially blowing up the state capitol building, threats against law enforcement, threats against other government officials. there's really a lengthy list of things we were concerned about and any of those things could have happened any time. there were prep rations being made, moving towards any or perhaps several of those acti

on charges in lansing, michigan and a lot of detail from attorney general nessel, who you are watching here. she said seven individuals in custody now. early reports were six. i will take that as an updated number, some from the wolverine watchmen, going after militia for activity they had been watching in their investigation. yesterday a series of federal search warrants were conducted around the state and the associated press reported six people were originally arrested. now from the attorney general, she said those seven individuals were trying to identify home addresses of law enforcement to do what they were accused of insighting a civil war. the plot also included the targeting, the capitol building in lansing, michigan and governor gretchen whitmer, who you see on the right side of our screen. the plot allegedly included taking hostages after they stormed that capitol building, along with the governor. and one of those who is accused in this plot, the charges included gang membership, felony firearm carry, litany of charges per individual that the attorney general went through,

attorneys appointed by president trump and democratically elected democrat attorney general dana nesselparty politics has no bearing at all when there is a plot to kidnap the governor of your state. and so very glad to see the show of unity by these law enforcement agents. but speaking of the coordination that's required, i have been involved in these kinds of take-downs before. we had a very similar case involving a militia about ten years ago. and the hardest part is deciding when is the right moment to take the group down? you need to gather sufficient evidence to be able to prove a case. on the other hand, you don't want to wait too long until tragedy strikes. the fbi refers to this concept as left of boom. the idea is if you put out a timeline, boom is the moment of the violent attack. you want to stop them somewhere left of boom but, of course, to prosecute the case successfully, you want to get as close to boom as possible so that you have sufficient evidence of a crime and not just mere talk. and so getting everybody to agree on that can be very challenging. deciding when is the
