how is nestle diverse applying?e thing is, the most important metric is full-year organic sales growth. that is 4.6% which is what analysts said they were expecting. really where nestle would like to be. they have the so-called nestle model of 5% to 6% on an annual basis. it is short of their own expectations though they have been guiding down. the way they are diversifying is getting into companies like one that they bought earlier this week, the 50% they didn't own. there are higher margins there and higher growth. this company makes products for acne and skin cancer, two things that aren't going to go away. we're all spending more money on our skin. you can bet it is going to remain a growth place. they have created a subsidiary for it to fit in, that is called nestle skin-health. it will set aside another called nestle's health science. they have stuff like a vanilla flavored drink and depression food thanks to biotech acquisitions they had in the last year. those businesses overall count for a couple billion do

what is nestlÉ up to? >> nestlÉ could gain as well.l about nestlÉ analyzing how it would reduce its $30 billion stake it has in the cosmetic company l'oreal. 29% it has in that company. come april, the restrictions on it selling those stakes will be lifted. company thatto the owns one third of l'oreal itself. with the expiring coming to an end in april, this seems to be a speed up in what nestlÉ and l'oreal is looking at doing. many investors are hoping that l'oreal itself would buy back those shares. that would boost your holding. after the market, that 29% would not exist anymore. each share that you own would become that much more valuable. it is interesting the relationships between nestlÉ, l'oreal, and a french drugmaker. that l'oreale holds. nine percent is held by l'oreal. it could buy back those shares. it?omplicated, isn't it essentially wants to get out of cosmetics and focus on nutrition and health. that is the key focus. >> why have all this money when itp in l'oreal could be getting back and investing elsewhere? >> john is

about 10% of nestle's operating profit each year. reason the, the shares are rising so much is that l'oreal shareholders are hoping l'oreal itself might buy back that stake. they might then cancel those shares, remove them from the market and boost the value of all shares already existing. it is a complex relationship between nestle, l'oreal and the family which holds another third. it is going to take some years but it could start happening as restrictions on the share sale >> that has been in place for a while. what happens next? that is why the timing is such. >> it is indeed. april is when the family that holds about one third of l'oreal would no longer have the right to first refusal. it comes a little bit easier to sell the shares. the reason it is in nestle's interest is that cosmetics is not a long-term strategy. it doesn't fit with their nutritional health strategy. the investment and has come a 30% stake, ties up capital. they could use that money. maybe they could take that chunk of cash, worth more than 20 billion euros,

stake in l' oreal, this morning nestle declined to comment on the report. this is the second largest shareholder of l' oreal behind the family with a 35.6% stake. nestle already announced to the management of l'oreal about their plans and could make an announcement at the next shareholders meeting in april. they could sell their stock to the public. this preemption right expires at the end of april on the 29th. they said clearly buying back the shares of nestle would make sense for l'oreal. they will report their data after the markets close. i was told there won't be any mention of the nestle story in the press release tonight, but tomorrow morning there will be a press conference and i'm sure that plenty of questions will be focused on that report because that will be a significant investment if l'oreal buys back their shares. the price is worth $32 billion. that's a big stake. >> that's a big stake. thank you, stephane. great to talk to you. >>> joining us from hong kong is charles eung, one of the key questions is whether l'oreal can continue what they

following this announcement by l'oreal and nestle overnight. stock is down 2% right now despite some positive earnings that were reported after the market closed yesterday. l'oreal posted a 5.4% increase of its revenue on a like for like basis on the fourth quarter that was better than expected. l'oreal will pay a dividend of 2.5 euros per share, almost a 9% increase from 2012. so from an earnings point of view, it was very positive, ross. >> and michelin's net income down 24%, but they are increasing the dividend. what are they saying about sales and what's the investor reaction? >> well, the problem for michelin remains the negative currency effect and that's not a big surprise. if you remember back in october, the company said clearly that it canceled its target to maintain a stable operating margin for 2013 because of the weakening currencies in latin america. more importantly in brazil and argentina. now, in terms of output, michelin says it's on track to meet its target for 2014, but only based on the average exchange rate for 2012. now,
