the church behind me, so much history here at new bethel baptist.tribution she made not only to music but also to this city. again, i mentioned new bethel baptist. this was really a center for the civil rights movement. her father, c.l. franklin, the street which is just perpendicular here to my left, it is named after him. he was a huge figure in the civil rights movement, and then when she started growing up and started singing in the church, famous people from all over the country would come to visit him. they would hear this incredible piano and in the next room come to find a five-year-old girl on the piano. of course, that's aretha franklin. she grew up singing in the church. she grew up releasing sort of these radio broadcasts. it was sort of a first for gospel music, especially here, and then she created her first album at 14. so detroit has a huge, lasting legacy with her. over time, over the years so much has been made about who she is, the original diva, the queen of soul, larger than life. around here she was just known as ms. franklin,
