well, let's march 12th, 1968, the new hampshire primary. what happened on the democratic side? lbj was still in the race as far as everybody knew at that point, correct? new york. new hampshire is an odd state for a primary. i mean i mean, eisenhower was in it in 52 without campaigning or being there and has a long history of write ins and just peculiar practices that that the rest of us don't always understand very well. and so johnson still won new hampshire, but the real shocking thing for people was how close to minnesota senator eugene mccarthy came to challenging him. mccarthy wasn't some unknown, but he was he was the first person to have the courage to challenge lyndon johnson from within his own party for the presidency. and he came within a few percentage points of defeating johnson, who didn't appear in the state and had almost no people on the ground at all and did not appear on the ballot. so i think that was really the mccarthy didn't win, but mccarthy did show is that johnson was vulnerable enough to challenge him that year. well, it was just over two weeks later
