our correspondent betty chen is at the court house in new haven, connecticut with the latest. betty, good morning. >> reporter: it was another gut-wrenching day in court yesterday and now this. the public is getting its first look at troubling images and chilling 911 calls in the trial of steven hayes, one of two men accused of murdering a mother and her children. these are the last images of jennifer hawke-petit it alive. this newly released bank surveillance video ticks off the final moments of a horrific crime. petit withdraws $15,000, nervously explaining to the teller she and her family are being held hostage and the money is for ransom. a bank manager called 911. >> we have a lady who is in our bank right now, who says that her husband and children are being held at their house. she is petrified. >> reporter: petit got the money and left the bank at 9:22. >> they told us they wouldn't hurt anybody if she got back there with the money. she believed them. >> reporter: at 9:26 police in unmarked cars to the petits' house. officers are told to block off the street but not to

jeff glor reports from new haven, connecticut. >> reporter: the latest paints a picture of a simple robberyong. on wednesday, a police detective gave a gripping account of a confession given by defendant steve hayes. hayes recounted how things got, quote, quickly out of control. >> this is a powerful testimony. because these are the words of the defendant himself, as to the savagery that these two imposed on this family. >> reporter: hayes told police that his accomplice entered the presidentit home through an unlocked door and beat william petit with a baseball bat. quote, the man began screaming and there was blood all over the place. petit spoke in court. >> another painful day for the family. and i think everybody saw that from the testimony. >> reporter: it was the explanation of the rapes that was most chilling. hayes says he escorted jennifer hawk-petit to the bank, where she withdrew $15,000. and when they returned, the other suspect had already raped 15-year-old sargella. he said he told her to have sex with the mother to even things up. she was later strangled to death. >> jurors

one month after the september 2008 murder of former councilman ken harris and the robbery of the new haven lounge, they got a tip about a possible suspect. tuesday, the man -- the man who called in the tip testified. he is an officer who worked for the shopping center who identified the three men on trial saying he frequently dealt with them because of loitering at the shopping center. prosecutors showed a video from a grocery store bank of the three men walking past security cameras. he saw the camera -- said the video online and pointed to the metal in the the middle with a "funny what" saying his legs tend to bend and go. he had seen him walk a lot. he identified charles mcganey from a side view. they were shown still photographs taken run the surveillance video. the german was off more than 30 minutes. >> you can change the time on the vcr. you can try to corrected. if you try and do not corrected, then it will not be correct on the picture. i was just curious was why was mr. covington's machine showing the incorrect machine? >> one more note on jermaine murray, they tried to prevent h

the three men robbed the new haven want -- lounge. they do name from the three defendants on bandannas and gloves located during the investigation. when asked about the approach to crime lab took, they told jurors it was an unbiased scientific analysis saying, "you cannot take these results." mcganey's attorney does not think this is consistent with video shown the jury. >> the bandanna, the masked, i have video proof he was not wearing any of this stuff. how is this relevant evidence? >> the jurors want to know if police tested a teacher for dna. they founded in other items in a trash can. >> the purse was supposedly stolen from the bar. that was the only item that was not tested. >> the defense called three witnesses included a man who told police he was sitting in his car at the northwest part of the shopping center when he heard a loud noise. two minutes later he saw three men running. he could not identify the men and he told police that he thought it could be anybody running. reporting live from downtown baltimore, barry simms,

connecticut representative mike lawler is a professor of criminal justice at the university of new havenks for joining us. you know this case from front to back. were you outraged when you first learned that these men were on parole? >> well, it's not just that they were on parole. it's the fact that there was information that the parole board and the department of corrections should have had that would have changed the decision-making here. this is a classic case of the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. since that time, there's been a lot of changes. but in retrospect, it's clear that things would have happened differently had the system worked as designed. >> so that's one hand not knowing what the other was doing. is that how the parole board saw fit to release them? >> these two guys, the younger guy is the more dangerous guy, the clearly -- the potential future predator. he had been identified by many people in the system -- for example, the sentencing judge in his case said, this guy is a potential killer down the road. but that information never got to the depar
