it goes to newark, new jersey. when the mayor of a small town fights to get the money back, which we were told we were going to have for property taxes, that is my job. every mayor and every councilman in the state knows that. >> may i respond? he was the mayor of the city that had plans for stability. when he ran the budget into a ditch and had no way of balancing his budget, he ran to jon corzine for what we would call extraordinary aid, a bailout for his city. what i did was i inherited a budget, a$700 million huge budget deficit, and we not only cleaned our books and shrunk the size of our government, but we gave tax breaks of $1000 to each person. city intowho ran his a ditch ask for a bailout. another one cleaned up finances. >> let's get out of the ditch and move on to jonathan. dan from our, austin raises a question about crime in newark. early in your tenure, the number of murders fell dramatically, but they have's take -- have ticked steadily upwards. what makes you believe that you should be elected to h

"the governor's claim to have fixed the state budget is fraudulent. the property tax burden has grown sharply on his watch. he's hostile to low-income families, including raising their tax burden. he has been a catastrophe on the environment. new jersey's credit rating has dropped during his term." the paper says chris christie's ego has done damage, "by removing two qualified justices from the supreme court without good cause, he threatened the independence of judges at all levels." they accused him of a "power gr

new york, new jersey, parts of new england were hit particularly hard. in delaware, we did not experience the level of devastation that was inflicted on our neighbors to the north and to the east, but our state did receive significant damage. in total, there were over 200 detectives attributed to superstorm sandy. today we remem remember the lives lost and those forever impacted by this storm. as i travel through delaware during and after the storm i saw some of the massive impacts of that storm firsthand. but i saw something else as well. i saw people from all walks of life pulling together, helping one another and taking care of their neighbors. the impacts of that superstorm are still fresh in my mind today as we continue to rebuild. in delaware, new jersey, in new york, and other places up the east coast. but not only are the impacts of the superstorm still fresh in my mind, something else is as well and that is this: the extraordinary efforts of ordinary people who left the comfort of their own homes in delaware, in maryland, in pennsylvania, new je

the first dollars for new jersey didn't flow to new jersey until the end of may. >> governor it's truehere were delays. and yet $60 billion in federal aid. and yet, so many people who lost their homes say they've barely seen a trickle of that. how you can explain that? >> well norah, first off, i don't know when you'd call $8 billion a trickle but $8 billion has been distributed in new jersey. despite the challenges i just talked about, between aid from fema and the sandy package, $8 billion has been distributed $51 billion available, $9 billion went to the federal program. we're going continue to work to make that even better. you've got to work with your partners in the federal government. and as all you can tell from looking at washington, d.c., that's sometimes not the easiest thing in the world. >> let me ask you about washington, d.c. and the current problems with obama care. jan crawford just reported that 800,000 people in new jersey are getting notices that they can no longer keep their existing plans. do you wish you had set up a state-run insurance exchange so people could u

are you satisfied with new jersey's recovery from sandy? >> well, charlie, listen i think we've made tremendous progress in the last year. tens of thousands of people back in their homes all the boardwalks rebill so many businesses that have come back online. but i also know that we still have a lot more work to do a lot of people who are frustrated or not back this their homes, and my mission is to get all those people back in their homes. from p begin, i said this was an 18- to 24-month process. we've made great progress in the first year but there are frustrations and challenges that remain and my job is to address those and evercome them. >> why are there 26,000 people still homeless? >> well there's a number of reasons. first, let's start with the fact it took 92 days for the congress to act on aid for sandy victims. that's unprecedented. it was ten days for katrina and 17 days for gustav. you remember me being pretty exercised about it at the time because i knew what that would do to add time at the end. the first fetd ral dollars fro

he's very well liked in new jersey. he has the highest popularity of any politician in that state except for one person, and that person is chris christie. now, we did hear a little bit of criticism in newark about cory booker, a schoolteacher told us she believes he's a little, quote, overrated and a maul business owner told me that booker appears too interested in his own political career and not only real people on the ground. what you overwhelmingly hear in newark where a lot of people know cory booker, he's extremely popul popular. people are leaving cars running in the street to take pictures with him. he's a celebrity politician in that town. when you talk to the supporters, a smaller number of people are the typical tea party republican. they were against obamacare and for a lot of conservative social issues against abortion and same-sex marriage. >> the last days of the race, that was a bold move to go out there heart on your sleeve and say i'm all the way out here on the tea party. >> it puzzled a lot of peopl
