it turned out in 2009 new york city named 135th street samuel battle. the daily news, for which i've worked since 1973, wrote a story about it. they called him the jackie robinson of new york city police department. it struck me that at that point having covered new york city, including the police, for more than three decades, i never thought about who the first black man on the force had been and how it had taken place. i set out to find out thinking it would be a great story there. newspapers of the day had written about him but had the 25 stories about samuel battle getting on the force, having difficulties being promoted, being involved in a case here and there. i asked the police department who had shown up at the sign posting thinking that whoever was there may have had an interest in him and may know something. that led me to sam battle's grandson who lives in california. his name is tony sharome. he lived with battle until he was about ten year's old. he had little boy memories of his grand-imposing grandfather that he adored, that was helpful. t
