new york. governor pataki first was elected to public office as the mayor of peekskill, new york. he served in the state assembly and senate and was elected three times to be governor of new york. welcome to the soapbox stage. thank you for being here and suffering in the sun this afternoon. it's a little hot but i will only talk or an hour and a half. let me begin with a question of my own you are probably asking. they will be 18 people on this soap box during this state fair. the question is, why pataki? that.rstand my background is vastly different from anybody else in this race. my vision for what we can do as a country is different because of that background. i am from new york, but i don't have a plane. i have three tractors. i was out on a tractor last week moving hay. i'm the only candidate in this entire race in either party who was born and raised on a farm in my hometown of peekskill, new york, lived on a far most of my life, and i'm still working with my wife, our family farm in upstate new york today. that sounds great, but what does it mean? any of you live on a farm or work on a farm or g

passed in the state of new york. nd something wasn't mentioned, almost part of the dream team which was one of the first dream teams ever created in the whole state of new york, which was created in 2010 as a support group for undocumented students and we created that team as a resource group to support, to give each other support our resources and information. and just a little bit going off a little bit about the report, something that i wasn't really mentioned is that being undocumented starts once you find out that you are undocumented, right? a lot of people knew -- a lot of people either face two ways, right. for one, you either grow up, you're living in this country, you think life is good. but then all of the sudden you find out that you're undocumented, and you face that harsh reality. in a second way, like in my situation, i always knew that i was undocumented. my parents always revealed that to me, right? they always told me stay low, don't talk to anybody. we could get deported at any moment. but i never -

i did it as a conservative republican in the state of new york, one of the deepest blue states in america. with 3 million more democrats than republicans. i say am going to reduce the workforce by 15% in washington. i did that in new york state. throw out a tax code that serves the powerful and lower the rates on working families and small businesses and americans across the board. i did that in new york. i lowered taxes by $143 billion, more than the other 49 states combined. get people off dependency on government. give them the opportunity to be independent and live the american dream and get on the employment rolls instead of the welfare rolls. you are going to hear that from a lot of people. i did that. and when i left as new york state governor, we had one million fewer people on welfare than when i took office because we did transfer people from the welfare rolls to the employment rolls, and we had almost 700,000 more private sector jobs. and by the way, my state assembly -- i'm a conservative republican. there are 103 democrats and 47 republicans in that state assembly. i had to c

owners.ng new york state senator tony avella says metal detectors are the answer. he's proposing legislation that would require them in theaters. >> i think it would cut down oncu anybody getting into whether it's a movie theater or shopping mall undetected. >> one at a time please, thank you. >> reporter: magnometers are already used at many major sporting events and concerts but fewer than 1% of movie theaters do. metal detectors can cost up to $5,000 each and operator costs could add up to $1 million annually at a time when most movie theaters sgins. do you think the small mom and pops will be able to do this? >> in my opinion, they probably won't. i think they'll take the risk that it won't happen to them. >> reporter: the national association of theater owners has not endorsed the use of magnometers. instead it urged members to make sure emergency plans are up to date and that emergency exits, like the one colorado theater shooter james holmes entered through, are properly secured.rg the largest theater chains have also banned costumes, face masks

new york state assemblywoman linda rosenthal said she has been raising the red flag about safety in this area for months. it's one of the top 20 most dangerous intersection wide. police have questioned the driver. no charges have been filed. >>> of all things, the lobster population has plunged to the lowest level on record and that's causing big problems for lobster farmers. some in connecticut and rhode island are going out of business ending a centuries old way of life. scientists say one of the biggest reasons is that the ocean is getting warmer. the lobster population, however, climbing in the cold waters off maine. >>> the ice budget challenge pays off with a breakthrough and is now making a comeback. more than 17 million people rose to the challenge last year getting soaked for charity. the viral campaign raised more than $220 million to fight als and some of that money helped researchers better understand a protein in the brain that is dysfunctional in nearly all als cases.

new york lawmakers have said they will also oppose the deal including democratic congressman eliot uncle. new york's junior senator gillibrand said she will back the deal although she called it imperfect. >>> new york state is stepping into help handle the deadly legionnaire's outbreak in the city. the outbreak is on the decline. meantime at least one lawsuit has been filed. cbs 2's alice gainer reports. >> reporter: 101 infected and 10 dead. health officials say five cooling towers all within 10 blocks of one another tested positive for legionella bacteria in the south bronx. 36-year-old marvin montgomery believes he contracted legionnaire's from the contaminated tower at lincoln hospital. he has lawyered up and plans to sue the city-run hospital. >> we think lincoln hospital breached its duty to adequately check, you know, the environmental systems for legionella. >> reporter: montgomery had a job passing out flyers outside of the hospital and would often go inside to use the bathroom. in addition to money, he wants accountability from new york city officials. >> he is irate. he feels that, you know, they had notice of this. and they just were dragging their feet. >> reporter: now the state has stepped

in rockland county, northbound new york state thruway 16 in harriman, construction wrapping up. alternate side parking rules are in effect. back to you, shirleen, ken. >> thank you so much. >>> we have breaking news in brooklyn. five people were shot early this morning. this happened inside a lounge. we find out one person is dead. this happened inside the buddha lounge before 3:00 this morning. rob nelson is live at the scene. >> reporter: we have new information right now about exactly what happened here. we know five people in all were shot, one fatally. it appears that the victim was the apparent target of the attack that happened a few hours ago. take a look at video. this happened at allies and it goes by the name of buddha lounge, a hookah shop on the street. about 3:00 a.m. a man walked in the business and began firing shooting the victim multiple times in the head and torso. that victim was taken to kings county hospital where he was pronounced dead. four other people were hurt. their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. video from inside the business shows
