[ sirens ] dozens of ambulances and other emergency vehicles rushed to the port of newark after reports of possible stowaways on board the containership. during a routine u.s. coast guard inspection of the villa de aquarius today, noises were heard coming from one of the sealed containers. there are thousands of them stacked high and investigators zeroed in on a few hundred. one by one, they were lifted off of the ship and independent. the container with a suspected stowaways was supposed to be carrying machine parts to norfolk, virginia, and was loaded on to the ship in india several weeks ago and left

they descended on port newark as the cargo ship docked. customs and border patrol heard knocking inside during an at- sea inspection. instead of going norfolk, virginia, the ship instead diverted to newark and it's there where authorities went to the ship and unloaded each container, they had to pry it off from the outside and begin inspecting for stowaways. the ship started out in the united arab emmirates, loaded in india and a last stop in pack. the last port was egypt on mid- 15. by mid-day, there is no sign of stowaways and the search conknows -- continues. more than 9 million cargo containers entereach year, about the size of a tractor- trailer. most of the ships that come into the u.s. are foreign-owned and foreign crude. they have warned about the scenarios, like using the containers to smuggle terrorists and chemical and bilow logical weapons. congress continues to look at ways to update port security. they said that citizens shouldn't expect or want complete container inspection. >> you don't have 100% screening. it's screening t

the air traffic control tower at newark liberty airport is critical to the entire aviation system, to the flying public. but the tower is constantly understaffed. i received many assurances from the faa over the years that this issue would be remedied, but the problem persists. we're still short a significant number of fully trained controllers. when might the be fully staffed? >> senator, as you and i spoke about, the staffing range for new york liberty airport is estimated to be between 32 and 38 controllers that would be appropriate to operate the facility. we have below that number in the 20s of actual certified controllers in the facility. we have an effort under way this year to transfer a number of additional controllers into the facility and plans for 2013. the other thing that we have done with new york liberty is to in recognition of the unique complex airspace that we have in northern new jersey and greater new york, we placed a tower simulator in that facility to provide the ability to do more on the ground training for controllers in that particular facility with the uniq
