a scare in the skies over newark international airport. fully loaded planes on final approach when the pilots of both planes reported a drone within a few dozen feet. the pilot of a southwest flight from phoenix saw it first. >> be advised there's something on final here. we don't -- we thought maybe it was a drone. it was pretty close. i'd say within, i would say, a quarter mile at most off our right. >> reporter: you can then hear the controller notifying the next flight coming from ft. lauderdale. >> united 2335, let me know if you do see that drone or whatever it is. >> we missed the drone by about 30 feet off our right wing up oe you spoke to us. >> reporter: the sightings happened at 3500 feet above nearby teterboro airport which is in the arrival path to newark. police searched from a helicopter as controllers immediately shut down arrivals at newark forcing dozens of planes to fly in circles. >> at first it said we were going to land in about 10 to 12 minutes and then a few minutes later the screen changed and said 52 minutes. >> r
