a heat wave here, you saw people flocking to the beaches in ventura and orange county, and the newport beach council there voting earlier this week to go ahead and keep their beaches open, just saying they would enforce those distancing guidelines more strictly. however, now the governor is going to come out, we expect him to say it today, saying he is just going to close all of the beaches. they're saying about 100 of the beaches they were looking at in california, 5% drew large crowds over the weekend. we know this because a memo was sent to the police departments across the state to give them time to prepare to institute this. as the governor has said, the virus does not take weekends off, and the other thing he's really concerned about is we're starting to see a flattening here in california. mind you, we've been in this state the longest time of the stay-at-home order. but he says he does not want to see a double peak while this is happening. orange county and newport beaches are saying they think this is an overreaction, poppy and jim. >> los angeles, they're not going to offer free te

newport beach actually held a meeting this week discussing the possibility of closing the beaches downain, but in the end decided to keep them open. now we know governor newsom is expected to announce this afternoon that he's going to shut down all of the beaches in the state starting tomorrow. it's unclear how long it's going to last. in response to this, the police chief of newport beach put out a statement, along with some pictures he said his police department took during the peak of the people visiting. he said the vast majority of family and visitors did follow social distancing guidelines and he feels they didn't have major issues there over this past weekend. it's a very different story in l.a. county where the beach are closed and have remain closed. l.a. county is the state's epicenter. the number of cases there are still spiking. meantime, l.a.'s mayor eric garcetti announced last night that anyone in l.a. county who now wants a covid-19 test can actually get a covid-19 test. they simply have to set up an appointment online but it is by far the biggest city to make such a pr
