[applause] >> thank you, mayor newsom. i want to spend a couple of minutes talking about the program itself. let me talk about the goals of the program. it really is about building aspirations in the hearts and minds of every child who enters the san francisco public school system. think about it -- the chance to let every child know that they have the equal opportunity to be successful, like everybody else in our city. that is the most important thing we can do, and to do that, we are going to use some city funds. we're going to open accounts and used city funds to put an initial small feat deposit into those accounts to make them real. the city will be voting either 50 or $100 in the account, depending upon the situation of the family, and that is meant to get the account established. the account will be open automatically, and that is a key feature of the program -- automatically opening up these accounts. this is something that has never been done before, giving folks an opportunity to save in a fashion that is as easy

[applause] mayor newsom: is that me? supervisor, i'm not ready for this. welcome, everybody, and thank you all very much for coming out today on this special ribbon cutting. supervisor maxwell and i were colleagues on the board of supervisors when this project was first brought up. i remember the controversy like it was yesterday. originally, as you know, this was supposed to be home depot. exactly. i knew it would be like saying the dodgers of san francisco or something. people immediately started to align themselves up in tents, those that just could not imagine a home depot, could not imagine a big box retailer in the city and county of san francisco. i remember all the community meetings of on the hill. all over. we were all over the city having community meetings about the basic future of san francisco and what kind of city we wanted. were we a city of neighborhoods, or were we just going to find a suburbanized san francisco as our future? that was the debate, and home depot had to come to the table, spend a great deal of time with supervisor maxwell.

a mayor who is making history, gavin newsom. [applause] mayor newsom: thank you. thank each and every one of you for being here. it is an honor to have you here, and you have been here many times with the flag raising ceremonies. this is, in particular, very important and appropriate that we ask all of you to be here. we share so much in terms of the respective histories. i am reminded every time i go down the hallway, of this history. the mayors who are here before the city of san francisco. the city was founded over 200 years ago. that connection in mexico and the relationship with spain, all the challenges that are good and bad. this is more positive with an engaging future. this is something that is indelible in the minds of the people of san francisco. particularly those who served as custodians of this great city. she is right to say that what makes san francisco special and what makes the bay area special, and the state of california so remarkable is the ability to attract people from every conceivable walk of life, regardless of race or ethnicity or sexual

the next question is, who replace gavin newsom at city hall? all, he still has a year left in his term and there's already a lot of speculation, who fillings in that spot? it's a lot of power. and just hours after gavin newsom finished celebrating his win as you see here, in the lieutenant governor's race, he was down celebrating the giants win. and guess what. the topic of who might replace him became front and center in his remarks to the crowd. let's give it a listen. >> this town is going to need another mayor soon. and i just have three words. fear the beard! >> what does he mean by that? well, for those of you who hang out at city hall, it appears to be a not too veiled reference to his nemesis, former board of supervisors president aaron peskin. notice the beard? okay. and who is quitely trying to put together the votes to replace gavin newsom? whether or not that happens, however, remains to be seen. but it appears that gavin decided to use a little callout to shout out that fact. >> you don't think anybody confused it with wilson? the

of the appointment to replace gavin newsom.ut he's got a problem because he's supposed to step down and become lieutenant governor january 3rd. the new board doesn't take office until the 8th. so there's a gap there of four or five days. there's been some talk of maybe he would wait until january 8th and then step down so the new board could get to vote. but that creates other problems. they're not quite sure, would that leave a vacancy in the lieutenant governor's office and might there -- there's even discussion that perhaps that would require confirmation because it would suddenly become like an appointment -- >> we haven't spent enough time trying to confirm the lieutenant governor in the last couple years. >> there are so many moving pieces -- >> any opinion on what his -- >> he is a key player because if no one gets six votes to become interim mayor by default he becomes, david chiu, the board president, becomes the interim mayor. but he's only board president until january 8th. and there's no guarantee that he'll get ano

let show you mayor newsom voting today.ok his wife and his baby to apology place, garage in the haight ash bury neighborhood and says if elected he will focus on the 3 e. education. environment. and economic development. so lieutenant governor does sit on dmaition deal with those issues. newsom went into tonight with a slight edge in the latest field poll up about 4 percent. as for able muldenado well he voted near his ranch in santa maria today. he has been lieutenant governor since april when he was finally confirmed by the legislature. he had been appointed by the governor to fill a vacancy when john the was elected to congress. muldenado has spent 12 years as state lawmakers. he grew up the son of migrant farm workers and says his style of leadership is what will set him apart from newsom. he said he believes in bringing republicans and democrats together to solve the state problems. now of course newsom if hopes he doesn't get a chance for that to happen. here's a back story or maybe the front story if you are one of t

newsom is set to take office in january. that's when the birthday of supervisors will meet here to decide who will serve out the remaining year of newsom's term as mayor. when gavin newsom leaves for sacramento, right now the person is david chu. on january 8th, a newly elected board of supervisors could decide to elect a new president. and it gets more complicated because the so-called acting mayor only fills the role until the board appoints an interim mayor. one person who seems to have some support, but not a lot of interest in the job is former san francisco mayor willie brown. >> i don't think there is any citizen of the city that couldn't consider being the interim mayor or mayor of san francisco. it's probably the best job in the world. but that's not something i'm after, period. >> reporter: the job of mayor can be filled by anyone in san francisco who is at least 21 years old. but it requires six votes from the board of supervisors. and a few candidates appear to be emerging. state senator mark leno for one. he tol
