i walked into the newsroom and all around the newsroom are pictures of dena and chandler. i kind of looked around and thought okay, welcome. so i decided i was going to go there and i was going to get out in front of the newsroom. i told them right away i want to assemble the stuff and i went out and basically said okay i'm a journalist, i'm here and i think i can help you guys and i basically tried to be honest with them. it appeared to the journalist that, you know, they will give you a fair shake. they travel in the fairness and balance and if they think you are honest and they will give you a chance even if they can't stand to which a lot of them probably looked at me like that. and so i basically did that and we tried to do it. but all throughout the industry you have to understand people -- we had gone through three or four years of trying to figure out the right size of the news room, how to downsize the news room. there were real economic winds blowing through the whole industry forcing all of us to do a lot of things we didn't like and that included laying off peo

pam cook live in our newsroom.is similar to what's happening in another california city. >>> earlier this year, oakley california started a program that is expected to save the city thousands of dollars every time a drunk driver gets into an accident. now, the "daily cow" was there and it was determined if a person was involved in an accident and in emergency personnel have to respond. the cost would depend on the number of responding police officers, time spent in jail, towing charges and and even the number of emergency vehicles that had to be called in. one paper says this would not only save the city money but it would also reduce the drunk drivings since money talks and he says the fees could be i as -- could be as high as $12,000. the oakley finance director says since the program was implemented there in february, that he have billed about five people for drunk driving- related accidents. but they are still trying to collect. reporting live in the newsroom, i'm pam cook, back to tori. >>> an american student

sergio is in the newsroom with tonight's events designed to make people's lives a little better. sergio? >> there were two vigils this evening in oakland. both were in memory of those recently killed. they were not coordinated. both groups had the same two goals in mind, honor those who have died and push for the violence to stop in their city. a fallen procession lead church. they are paying respects to esparza, a member of their congregation. he was gunned down three blocks away from his church. and among those in the procession and the following street side vigil is his wife. thanks to everyone for your support she says of her fellow parishioners who turned out for the vigil. she says she is overwhelmed by the idea of having to raise two sons now alone. >> we just want to support her family and let the community know that we are done with this. we want this to stop. >> reporter: the idea behind this vigil and all of the people turning out. they want to bring focus to this incident, but also make sure no future shootings occur in oakland. and that's behind this vigil, 10 miles

pam cook is in the newsroom with more. >> that's right.eges are -- college students are dreading tuition. we're live at the mission day campus of ucsf. the uc region begins in less than an hour and they are going to consider raising tuitions again by at least 8%. it could be as high as 16% every year through 2016. we just spoke to university of california president mark yudof what was -- who was heading into the meeting this morning. he blames a popular culprit, the state budget problem. i hate it when we have to raise tuition. we need to get a better deal with the state. as long as they are investing less and less. how do we maintain quality? >> he's talking about the uc system that has seen cuts -- seen cuts of $2.3 billion in the last couple of years. he also just told us that the uc regents have been drying hard. they've cut cost, they've laid off people. they are down a lot of money and he says it's his job to make sure the system is running effectively. right now, tuition is 12,192, about 12,000 and they are talking about tuitions th

anne makovec is in our san francisco newsroom with more. ann, take it away. >> reporter: today we are expecting to hear more from police. they are planning to release some of the names of the people who were killed in the attack. and the national guard is going to share some of their history including whether they fought in any wars in their lifetimes. right now, we only know it was three national guardsmen and a woman who were killed. this was the scene right after that shooting at the ihop restaurant in carson city at around 9:00 yesterday morning. witnesses say the shooter, eduardo sencion, got out of his van, shot a woman in the parking lot, stormed into the restaurant and started firing an automatic weapon. they say at one point, the emergency exit alarm was set off and he took off through the back door. he shot at a few surrounding businesses and then killed himself in the parking lot. we heard last night from one of sencion's family members, who didn't want to go on camera, but said sencion was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia b
