it is odd to be talking about the history of newt gingrich thinking gosh, i lived this. i have two questions, comments. the first is to see if i can get you guys to respond more to the idea that, you know, how important was gingrich to changing to the course of american history and in response to congress. you know, the trend in this began before gingrich. if you look at republican identification in terms of the partisan splits in the general public, you know, that started well before gingrich. it starts to go up in the '60s. it kind of plateaus there. it kind of resumes the trend that starts in the '60s. if gingrich had not come on the scene would we have ended up in the same place? i wanted to see if you could respond to that. the second thing is this remarkable rise to power, very rapid, transforming in many ways. he also has a rapid fall. he is speaker for only a few years. there is an attempt against him and he has to resign pretty much in disgrace. he has brought republicans out of the wilderness. we this doesn't last very long in the position he most coveted. can y
