nguyen, how does that happen? >> well, the testing issue and coronavirus in general unveils the systemic inequities in the health system and society. i was talking to clinic in additions tod-- trying to get tr patients tested. these are patients with symptoms and may have exposures and known exposures to patients with coronavirus but they just cannot get these tests. and it's extremely frustrating to be that patient or be the doctor when you see that other people are able to get these tests. to be sure, we just need more testing broadly because we need it to direct clinical care and we need it to figure out as dr. patel was saying what exactly is the extent of the disease in this country? if we don't know, then how are we able to plan? how can we anticipate and figure out the right public health measures to tackle this epidemic? >> dr. patel, there's new information now about what new york city is facing. they've not only close to having the capacity they need. governor andrew cuomo is specific about this. they ar

here is candice nguyen. >> reporter: san jose firefighters have been hit hard by coronavirus.zens either treated or forced to stay home because of exposure. all while calls continue to come in and times ahead remain uncertain. >> it was a gut punch and we realized it is here. >> reporter: sean with san jose firefighters local 230 remembers the call when his team responded to a patient in critical condition. >> the crew went right in and did what we do to keep that person health. >> reporter: five days later they heard the patient had covid-19. >> and our hearts just sunk thinking there they've come back to work and who else did they interact with. they've gone home to their families. how wide is this going to spread and what do we need to do now? >> reporter: shortly after 10 firefighters tested positive and more than 50 were quarantined because of possible exposure. south bay fire crews are at the highest risk for contracting the virus because santa clara county has the most confirmed cases in the bay area. the fire chief tony bodden said one firefighter was exposed. >> i am

candice nguyen, nbc bay area news. >> there is encouraging news.china where the coronavirus started, it is slowing down. so what did they do over there to contain this? in wuhan, china, in december, at one point the government was dealing with 15,000 new cases each day. today that number is down to 20 people a week. these numbers tell the story now n. all the virus infected nearly 81,000 people. it killed more than 3,000 people. the most important number, though, is 64,000 people who have recovered. today in wuhan all 14 of the field hospitals that were set up to treat the coronavirus were closed. that is good news. so how did they get there. the government locked down the entire region. people weren't even allowed out of homes. each household could send one person out for necessities once every three days. patients with mild symptoms were not allowed to stay home. they were isolated in temporary facilities at gymnasiums or event halls and people who came in contact with anyone infected were sent to designated facilities like a hotel or hostile for

lena nguyen, what do you think, how much hope should we put into this drug to fight the pandemic? >> we should have hope. there are treatments being tested, and i'm glad we're proceeding with urgency to test all these. i agree with and appreciate dr. gupta's reporting. there are medical, legal, scientific, ande ethical standards for a reason. we don't want to give everyone reason to think everything will be fine and maybe they don't need all these preventive measures when there's a treatment, when there's not actually a treatment. i'm concerned about the run on these drugs. hydroxychloroquine is used for patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. those patients are reporting they can't get their medication anymore because other people are going out there to try to hoard this medication, thinking that it's somehow a magic pill. so there are all these societal effects when the president says something that's not yet based in evidence and science. >> sanjay, let me follow up, when do you think we might see some real results from rigorous drug trials as far as these two drugs are c

chris nguyen is live with the new restrictions announced tonight. chris. >> reporter: dan, those numbers are expected to climb. that's exactly why these aggressive measures are put into place here in santa clara county. as you know, that's leaving a lot of families scrambling. with so much uncertainty in the air, santa clara county officials took the unprecedented step of banning public or private gatherings of more than 100 people. >> we believe these actions are necessary to protect the well-being of our community during one of the most hess torque public health challenges of our time. >> gatherings of 35 to 100 people are to be halted immediately unless certain conditions are met to reduce the likelihood of transmission at those events. this includes arenas, theaters, restaurants, bars, or any other confined indoor or outdoor space. however, airports, offices, transit, classrooms, medical facilities and retail environments are exempt from the order. >> they have to make these decisions based on limited information about covid-19 and with limited

abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has more about the new program in san jose. >> reporter: in san jose the demand for services keeps growing by the day as those in the community who have lost hours and wages due to covid-19 turned to the agency for assistance. this man typically works multiple jobs to make ends meet. but as the novel coronavirus crisis exploded, he was laid off and is now worried about whether he will be able to weather the storm. >> i know a lot of people out there they are hurting for food, work hours, everything's cut off to everybody. >> reporter: but help could soon be on the way. today the santa clara county homeless prevention system launched an $11 million relief fund to assist residents with rent and other basic needs. >> all of the funds that we are raising will be directly dispersed into our homelessness prevention network where the experts on the ground at each of these organizations can move quickly to solve each family's crisis. >> reporter: to qualify, applicants must have a household income of less than 80% of the area median income. that's around $103,
