nia, great to see you. thank you. >>> ben carson's new threat likely to start a whole lot of hand-wringing among republican officials. joining me is democratic strategist jim as well as former communications director at the rnc, at the republican national committee. doug, first to you, what is going on here. give me the inside scoop of what you think was going on in that meeting and also what do you think of this threat from ben carson that he could defect? does that make a brokered convention more or less likely? >> one, i don't think there's any realistic chance in december there's going to be in july a brokered convention. it's something that gets talked about as a political fantasy and a lot of intrigue. the reality is, the winner of the iowa caucus, win big on super tuesday is the candidate who will ultimately be your nominee. think a brokered convention is not very likely. if you're ben carson, you've had a string of weeks where you've not been able to make any real news, you've fallen in the polls. w

also, cnn political reporter, nia-malika henderson.nda, you've got cruz and rubio head-to-head last night. if trump does falter, do you see this race as possibly coming down to the two of them? >> absolutely. i do think that. a lot of people have forecasted it would come down to them. it's really interesting. we've seen sort of the governor's fall as a collective class and the senators rise. and one of the reasons i think that is is because the senate has been the closest, most proximate place for someone to really fight against the obama agenda. while the governors want to look back and talk about their records, they weren't really in the middle of the fight. i do see a cruz/rubio primary happening, but for the life of me, i can't figure out why rubio is picking these fights right now with ted cruz, reminding the conservative base of what they view as his greatest sin with the gang of eight, rather than trying to take away support from jeb bush, chris christie, and the others in the so-called establishment lane. >> nia, the rubio fact

. >> with me now to talk about all of it, cnn senior political reporter nia-malika henderson.k at the critical latino votes, specifically for the gop contestants here, who is playing better with that group of voters? >> well, it depends. if you look at the primary, the gop primary, not a lot of latino voters are going to be voting in these states. particularly those early states. but when you look at a general election, of course, they're going to be a lot more latinos in crucial states like nevada, colorado, florida and oeven virginia. if you look at that, i think rubio is playing a little better. again, here is a person who was very much for amnesty, which is what the gop folks and primary base voters call it, for pathway to citizenship and very much a part of that bill, but seems to have walked away from at least that bill. and there you have rubio also arguing that cruz is also trying to play it both ways. on the one hand pitch himself as something of a purist and very hawkish on immigration reform and illegal immigration on a general but then in a general election would p

we bring in nia-malika henderson. we have good numbers here. we have the cbs news/"new york times" poll numbers. >> brand new numbers this morning. >> and numbers poppy brought in. trump is at the top. and that chris christie got a good pop. he got a big endorsement. what's the state of the race in new hampshire? >> it's also -- yes, he got that big endorsement but he's been on the ground there in the traditional way you're supposed to be on the ground there at town halls, at houseport parties. he's great at that kind of retail politics. he's really a master of it. i think it's starting to show in those polls. the irony is, donald trump hasn't done those kinds of things. in new hampshire but yet still he's far and away in the lead in those polls. but you do start to see donald trump sort of in one tier and those other guys, christie and rubio in another tier. my goodness, jeb bush certainly not gaining any traction in this latest poll. i think he might be up a point or so. >> one point. >> this is after spending millions and millions of dollars
