joining us now is nicholas wu, congressional reporter for politico, mr. wu, thanks for being here. congratulations on your reporting on this thus far. >> thank you, rachel. >> so the way that you and mr. cheney described it in your most recent report, you said that you've your uncovered, you obtained records from the national archives that indicate that a fraud investigation was started from the investigators at the national archives. could you tell us what that is, and a put a little more meat on these bones? >> this came as part of the public records that you mentioned earlier that i had failed with the different secretaries of state offices and i came across these emails from an official in the inspector general's office in the national archives who was asking the state officials in arizona about these, you know, sovereign citizen electors, and asking, you know, that they were pursuing this potential fraud and looking for any other kind of misconduct and trying to deconflict from any other state level investigations that might be going on and from the look of the emails basicall

but nicholas wu turned it around and filed the state equivalent of foias. he filed state public records requests with state government officials in all the relevant states asking them what they had handed over to the january 6th investigation. and under state freedom of information laws, state public records laws, bingo.nttaalst nicholas wu at "politico" has been able to find this new avenue into unearthing what the committee is seeing. and what he has turned up, at least as of yet, includes this. look at these documents here. turns out it wasn't just in wisconsin. on the left side of your screen these are the similar forged documents from republicans in michigan purporting to be the electors from the state of t ef michigan, casting their votes for trump, even though michigan voted for biden. on the right side of your screen these are newly unearthed forged documents from republicans in vo arizona, again purporting to be the real electors from the state of arizona, casting their votes for trump, even though in reality trump lost arizona and biden won. now,

the thanks to nicholas wu's reporting at politico, here it is. page one the state seal of the state of arizona and it repeats throughout the document. the thing has a notary stamp on it. but it's headlined the seating and voting of electors for the general election for 2020, the electors documents amend the previously submitted documents. whenever you have gotten before, these are the real ones. and you see the headline under the actual state seal from arizona, the certificate of ascertainment of the electors. and then all the rest of the pages are each of those 11 republicans purporting to be electors, each of them one by one solemnly attesting an signing their names to that document that says they are the real presidential electors from arizona and cast their electoral college votes for donald trump and mike pence. each one individually signed and notarized under the official seal of the great state of arizona. these documents are forgeries. these people are not the real electors. both in michigan and in arizona, just like we saw in wisconsin.

then last night, thanks to reporting from politico.com, the reporter nicholas wu, we were able to show you additional forgeries from additional states. turns out it was not just wisconsin. republicans in michigan and republicans in arizona also created forged documents after the election where they tried to pass themselves off as the real electors for those states. when in fact they were not the real electors for those states. and again, they didn't just prepare these documents for, you know, home scrapbooking, how i wish the election had gone. right? they actually prepared these documents, made them look as official as possible. they cited u.s. law, they proclaimed themselves officially to be the legal representatives of the state. and they sent these things in to the government to be counted. pretty astonishing thing. right? we first got the forged documents from wisconsin last month. and last night, we showed you similar forgeries from michigan and from arizona as well. now, if you watched last night's show, do you remember how i said, when i was talking about this story, raise your

joining me now is nicholas wu, a congressional reporter for politico and covering extensively the story of the fake electors and the subpoenas that have been issued. nicholas, it's great to see you. in this statementuct the subpoenas chairman benny tale thompson encouraged the individuals to cooperate with their investigation. what have you learned so far? do you think that's going to happen based on your reporting and early indications? >> early indications show that the committee is still waiting to hear back from any of these folks. right after these came out from the wisconsin republicans indicated they might actually cooperate with this investigation here but with the caveat that they saw their acs at the time as consistent with the legal counsel of wisconsin republicans. and this is important because they're trying to put some distance between themselves and what the committee appears to be looking at here, which was whether there was any coordination between these alternate slates of electors and the trump campaign or even the white house. >> and as you point out in your piece fo

in the last few days here, thanks to reporting from nicholas wu at politico.com and thanks to public records requests filed by the watchdog group american oversight, we have been able to obtain and show you all five of those forged documents from republicans in those five states. crucially what we've noticed is that this doesn't seem to have been an instance in which five disparate groups of people in five different states all had the same forgery idea coincidentally at the same time and they just independently all happened to do the same thing. if you look at the false documents that these five states or that republicans in these five states sent in to congress and sent in to the national archives, the documents match each other exactly. the same font, same spacing, same exact wording. because of that, i mean maybe it will all prove to be a coincidence, but it does appear to be a coordinated effort. at the very least it appears that somebody distributed a template to republicans in these five states and potentially beyond telling them that this is how they should create these forged

. >> joining us now, congressional reporter at "politico," nicholas wu, thank you so much for being here to start this monday. you have obviously been covering this story closely. what is the latest you are hearing from your sources about the committee's next moves? do we have any additional subpoenas or hearings in the works based on on all of this new and alarming information? >> for now, the committee is still on track to hold public hearings this spring. i mean you know, chairman thompson laid a whole agenda out to stick to the public schedule, to really get their findings out there and not to mention put them on track to eventually release a report capturing all of this. perhaps this fall. and so the bigger issue is that the committee is going to have to make some big decisions in the coming weeks about what to do, as it gets closer to the president's inner circle. we already saw them request that ivanka trump come in for an interview the beginning of february. it is unlikely she will come in without a subpoena. and what will they do with other trump campaign members or the former p

this is my nbc news capitol hill team colleague, ali vitali and politico congressional reporter nicholas wu. ali, i'll start with you. what do we know about who these folks are and why? >> you laid out the basics here. 14 people subpoenaed today across seven different states, all of them states that biden won, and all of them states where we saw fake slates of electors also sent to the national archives. it really gives us a sense of how the january 6th committee is looking into the efforts to overturn the election results. the way that you can think about these fake slates of electors are that in these states that biden won, in some of them we were seeing the trump campaign try to contest the election results. some of these slates of electors were being put forward in that vein, following through to the ending conclusion, even though biden ultimately won those states. what you can think of them as are bricks that are laid in the larger conspiracy theory that some in the trump orbit put forward that they could be used by mike pence and supersede the will of the people and make trump stay pr
