nichols. we walk you through the clips of what he endured and where reform needs to begin. >>> and a deadly shooting near jerusalem in a synagogue. >>> across the united states we're seeing anger, we're hearing demands for change, but we're not witnessing the violent demonstrations many feared would come after the public saw those images. memphis officials released over an hour of video that started with traffic stop involving tyre nichols on january 7th. take a look. now there is already a lot of anger toward police over the incident with loud calls for reform. these protesters in memphis, for example, blocked a major bridge for a time, but no arrests were made. nichols' funeral is set for next wednesday. ever since he died from his injuries on january 10th, we heard gruesome descriptions of what happened to him. now we have video taken by the officers' own cameras. they're facing second-degree murder, kidnapping, and other charges. nichols' mother understandably struggled to put her emotions

nichols and then the time in which emt personnel arrived and other elapsed time before nichols is taken away in an ambulance and asked about the length and appropriateness, people can judge for themselves. with respect to the fire department persons, nothing we did yesterday concludes additional charges for being filed later on against other individuals. but as to the likelihood of that or, you know, whether we're looking at that, those are the kinds of details that i really can't talk about with respect to an ongoing investigation. >> can you talk -- if you can't characterize the period of elapsed time, can you tell us how many minutes lapsed between when injuries were apparent with tyre nichols and officers on scene called for an ambulance or a period of elapsed time before the ambulance got there. can you tell us in a matter of minutes. >> i hesitate to give numbers, but there were multiple minutes between each of those things, and a few short hours, people will be able to find out exactly. >> we know all five officers have now bonded out of jail. only four had done so previously. th

nichols. and it is just hard to watch. here we have national protests breaking out throughout the nation. the last time we saw this was in 1968 for something that happened in memphis which was tragic. that was the assassination of dr. king. so, it is tough for memphis. we are having to work through it. and this is something that we'll hopefully lead to better legislation. the passage of the george floyd act in congress. the passage of other acts here locally in tennessee. the parents have asked for, the parents of tyre nichols, they have asked for a tyre nichols bill. which puts forth a platform that says, you have a duty to intervene. part of the issue with the sheriff's deputies was that they did not intervene once they made the scene. tyre was suffering, he was calling out for help, he was calling out for his mother, yet no one rendered aid in a timely fashion with prevented his death. that is a problem. that is a violation of training, that's a violation of the procedures, and we have to d

you spoke with tyre nichols's family this morning. it was such a powerful and gut-wrenching conversation that we all watched. what did you take away from your time with that family? >> some of, wolf, good evening, some of the what the president just said. she was doing, she believes or she is doing what her sob would have wanted her to do. and i thought it was striking that she said that she felt sorry for the officers and that she believed her son was put on this earth for a mission. and perhaps what happened to him was somewhat of an accomplishment of that mission and that she was going to carry it on. i was surprised that -- when she walked into the interview, she said i'm not very good at this. i said i got you. just talk to me. and think she's very good at what she's doing. i can't imagine what she's going through and the strength, wolf, that it takes to be able to sit down or stand in front of cameras and really pour your heart out. it was gut wrenching. she was very candid. she's very honest. the thing that stood out to me most

nichols. and how, frankly people across the country are reacting tonight to what they have seen and what we are all seeing on these videos. there's more than one different vantage point. some body cam, some with audio, some without. it is all collectively and individually so difficult to watch. human being, 29-year-old man, beaten mercilessly over and over and over and over. when it started, when police first told him over, it was him, it was he who tried to calm the situation. >> i did not do anything. >> get on the ground! >> all right, all right. >> get on the [ laughter ] ground! laydown! i'm fixing to tase you. >> i'm going to break you. put your hands back. >> you guys are really doing a lot right now. >> even looking at that, can't even understand why it escalated, why there was anger by the officers. why the screaming compared to the calm of a man pulled over. we are still waiting to figure out what, if their answer can ever come. frankly, what you saw was nothing what was prepared for

his hands as nichols cries out for his mother. in all, the video covers about 38 minutes from the moment that officers yank the 29-year-old over, out of his vehicle, when they pull him over to the arrival of an ambulance on the scene, for 21 minutes it shows police officers, sheriffs deputies and emts talking and walking around him but no run renders aid as he is slumped over on a vehicle. >> that's another difficult portion of the video to watch. five of the officers at the scene are now facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder and kidnapping and this morning two sheriffs deputies who are present are now on leave pending an investigation. and what many feared would be a night of violence was largely peaceful with protests across the country in new york. three people were arrested, one for breaking the windshield of a patrol car. but, overall, what we saw were calm and peaceful protests. >> amara, which want to bring in sara sidner to this conversation. sara, you spent the night with protesters. you visited the scen

nichols. we understand and acknowledge the grief that the friends and family of tyre nichols are experiencing right now as well as the great concern throughout all of memphis and shelby county about this case. we met several times this week with the family of tyre nichols. they described an almost perfect son, a cheerful and happy person who enjoyed skateboarding and sunsets over shelby farms park. we're grateful to the family of tyre nichols for their patience as we expedited both the investigation and the consideration of charges in this case as well as the understanding on the part of the fa family, that premature release of the video could compromise both. and we did work quickly to expedite this investigation because of the extraordinary nature of the case compared to the average prosecution decisions in a case like this. we worked swiftly, but also fairly, and most importantly in a way calculated to ensure that we have a strong case. as you might have heard from ms. williams in this case

the charges came just 16 days after tyre nichols's death. a kind of rapid action happen mostly, probably, because of the newly elected shelby district a county -- who ran on a platform different -- address racial profiling and de-escalation training tactics. and the memphis chief of police has also spoken out about reforms, including on a national scale. the kind of timeline we have seen in the tyre nichols case is not the norm when it comes to police violence against black americans, especially when it comes to these killings that have been caught on video. in the 2014 you're killing of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald in chicago -- captured on dash cam video, it took nearly 14 months for the police officer who killed him to be charged. in 2019 it again took four months for a texas police officer to be charged in the killing of 44-year-old pamela turner. it took over three years for five police officers to be indicted in the 2019 brutal beating of unarmed ronald greene in baton rouge, which, again, was captured on body cam video. that's it for u
