nick paton walsh is there, nick, what are you seeing? looks like police moving in? >> reporter: well, it's hard to tell, anderson, when you see movements of police, that's simply shift changes. police have been doing very long hours here. whether that marks some new progress on the ground. the last 10, 15 minutes, the focus on clearing this area. but there is still that pocket of protests down the left-hand side of the park. it seems to be substantial. it's hard to tell given the distance in the dark down there. police are not moving against them. when we first spoke to you earlier, anderson, you saw the fireworks emanating from that direction. so clearly that's something the police will have to deal with. they want to have control of the perimeter around gezi park before dawn. in about 2 1/2 hours from now. but we are seeing continued activity in central taksim. bulldozers moving in, collecting debris, removing the barricades. i think that's what police want to achieve as quickly as possible. clearing the concrete space. they've still got this issue of protesters.

nick is in istanbul with more. what can you see from your vantage point, nick?we have been seeing is what looked like water cannons firing in the direction of the park. we don't know in which direction that's happening. there's a separate move by police down up with of the concrete roads on the left hand side of the park as you face it from the shot you're seeing now. there's been barricades for much of the day. until we cently police just piled straight down that particular road an enormous cloud of tear gas ahead of them. it seems different police units and color. i don't know if that signifies a change in shifts but we have seen the most coordinated effort by police so far today to push protesters back. as we're seeing now there appear to be a group of police at the mouth of gezi park from here through the smoke. police moving on the left of the park as well and remarkably nobody in the square about half an hour to 45 minutes ago was just packed with protesters. >> does this seem as though it was a coordinated police effort that had been in the making, planne

nick paton walsh is live in istanbul. what can you tell us about the tone and tenor of the events behind you right now? >> reporter: well there has been a somewhat dramatic development. so far what we've seen today appeared to be a police strategy to take control of the area around central gesi park, an encamped area with lots of people living there in tents for weeks. we saw riot police inside the tree line moving into the heavily encamped area, that will be a significant concern of the hundreds of people inside there. we did see tear gas go inside that camp briefly as well. there are many people in there, densely populated, tent in there, many will be deeply worried about the police moving in. they appear to have withdrawn slightly. it's hard to see from our vantage point what is happening inside there but the real fear of course would be the impact on protesters if police moved in there, where would they run to. it contradicts what we've been hearing from the government of phe said we've been having more altercations b
