nick paton walsh joins us live from the turkish side of the border with syria. believe civilians are still living there. >> it's hard to know how many are in there. people are coming back to protect their homes but it's hard to see how anyone can live. the conditions are remarkable. you hear a coalition air strike go in, normally three separate explosions, it shakes the walls and the floor you're in and around you during the nights you hear the mortars land, often homemade bombs, a gas canister for example for domestic heating filled with bits of scrap metal and launched indiscriminately at civilian areas. during the night we think we heard some of that shrapnel clanging as it hit the concrete streets around the area where we were. very difficult time for civilians there. they say food is lacking, fuel for heating and it's increasingly cold winter and increasing now isis moving towards the center of the city. we've been told 20%, 30% were in isis hands. they have about half of that city, the fight still ranging at night. endless machine gunfire, hard for childre

our nick paton walsh and his crew follow a kurdish fighter. we have nick overlooking kobani.footage there of intense situation, nick. >> reporter: christine, what is remarkable is after weeks, we saw the fight from inside the hill of turkey. there is so little left to fight over and the people who try to eek out a life are looking for food, fuel and something to get through the winter. it is a fight itself that is deeply chilling and remarkable on the frontline with coalition technology in the skies trying to support them. the fighters on the ground are often 22-year-olds. we spoke to one commander who told us how one of her friends had died trying to defend others. >> there were heavy clashes with isis. we were out numbered. she advanced to help save the other injured with her. isis surrounded her because girls are very prized by them. she then blew herself up and killed a lot of them with her. i was near her then. her last words were we will liberate our land with the last drop of blood in my body. >> reporter: it is a gripping detail, christine, but there is one smell that

nick paton walsh brings us that story. >>> it is 4:00 p.m. in manila, 8:00 a.m. in london. typhoon hagupit is nearing the philippines at this hour. derek is standing by with all the details. derek, it's obviously no longer a super typhoon but it's nevertheless still a very dangerous storm. >> it is, but we have got some good news to report finally. this storm does show signs of weakening. in fact, we've got the latest joint typhoon warning center update on typhoon hagupit. you can see 205 kilometers per hour is roughly 15 kilometers per hour below what it was three hours ago. so we're starting to see this storm start to weaken. that is good news as it's still another nine hours or so before it makes landfall in the central philippines. it's picked up speed at 15 kilometers per hour. that means we could get a slightly earlier landfall time, so we want to be on high alert across this area. it's making its way north of tacloban and expects to bring the northern sections of the eyeball south of here, that is important because we're expecting significant storm surge across that

i'm joined now by paul callan and nick paton walsh thousands of miles from his usual beat in the world's most dangerous places. first to you, nick, the blowback, originally people thought leading up to the release of the report that this would be catastrophic for our service members. people were put on notice, positioned overseas they needed to be on high alert. our marines were being warned. did it feel that way? was it that way? is it that way or are we only at the tip of the iceberg? >> there is a real silence, frankly, from the usual groups you would expect to respond to something like this, partially because a lot of the details we kind of already knew. there are some barbaric things in there that are fresh but a lot of it was presumed to have happened in the middle east during this dark period in american history. we may see this being used in propaganda in the future. we may see it being used perhaps as justification for latter acts. but they're not going to attack when everybody's particularly ready for it. it hasn't materialized yet but it may pop up in the future. >> another qu
