our political editor, nick watt, is there. nick, how was the atmosphere today with the eu 27? there there are lots of warm hugs? we had a rare sight this evening over dinner with a 28 leaders including theresa may which was a uk prime minister being praised by fellow eu leaders. i have covered more of these summits than i care to remember and i cannot think of a president of having a uk prime minister being praised like that. tony blair, the most pro—eu prime minister since ted heath, had stand—up rows with jacques chirac and gerhard schroeder. what is going on? the eu are impressed with theresa may's message which is she was an orderly brexit, it is a difficultjourney, but she praised eu leaders for working with her. the other message was she wants in the future for the uk and the eu to be close friends and allies. but these eu leaders are also making a raw calculation. they believe theresa may is gritty, they quite respect her and they think she would be far better than the alternative and that alternative they believed would be boris johnson. another point is the vote in pa

nick watt our political editor is here, explain what mr grieve is hoping to do?t the government? well we have a government that is very nervous it could be about to suffer its first defeat on the eu withdrawal bill because the rebels led by dominic grieve the former attorney general are digging in on their call for that meaningful vote on the deal figures out of the eu. so tomorrow we will get some warm words from the government and of course i will say we will not dream of using the powers in this legislation to sneak through that deal without consulting parliament. the rebels saying not good enough. you have got to amend this bill and if you do not like the wording of dominic grieve you can fiddle around with them at the later report stage. i'm hearing the rebels saying the government is behaving in a cack—handed and bizarre ways so tonight we have this band. the chief whip jordan smith follows the example of never losing a vote so it is losing difficult, do a deal. but does dominic grieve have the numbers, he has nine tory mps signing his amendment plus others

our political editor, nick watt, is here. how will those words be greeted in downing street? to new wording, but it must be in addition to the current wording. theresa may wants to avoid what happened at the weekend when the dup were not shown the wording. she is consulting on the text and she is talking to sinn fein. but she has a very difficult balancing act. she has to win back the dup, but not in a way that sinn fein tumble out of the equation. it is very difficult. a dup source said this evening that the wording is toxic and has to go. another dup source said they did not like the wording and could just about envisage a situation where the existing wording stays, but the new wording would have to be dramatically in their favour for that to happen. plus, michel barnier has said, effectively, that there is 48 hours to sort this out. gosh, that clears the head. and intervention on philip hammond as well. he told the treasury select committee that it would be inconceivable for the uk not to pay its financial settlement of the uk, even if we don't have a deal. downing street
