firms like toshiba, toyota, and nissan have had to stop production because with 11 of japan's 54 nuclear out of action, they're running out of energy. >> we've stopped production as of today. we're taking the opportunity to assess how affected each operation is. frankly, it's extraordinarily complex. it's not just our factories, it's also our suppliers. obviously, some of the suppliers are within the exclusion area for the nuclear plant. >> it's insurance companies that are hardest hit. it's estimated that the physical damage from the japanese earthquake and tsunami will cost $51 billion to repair and the total cost to the economy from that and lost production could total $99 billion. that would make this disaster about as costly as hurricane katrina in new orleans in 2005. >> one of the things we know about the japanese market is it tends to keep a lot of its exposures within the domestic japanese insurance market so i think they will bear a brunt of it but once it gets to a certain level, the losses will be shared amongst the international community and we'll see if foreign currencies

and in japan, nissan is resuming work at some of its parts plants this week. it hopes to start building cars again on thursday, but not at full production levels. japan's entire auto industry is still facing big challenges, including rolling power blackouts. >> susie: . >> at&t feels gave a nice boost to investor confidence and a nice boost to stocks today. >> it certainly did, the megabuyout deal helping out optimism for investors today, so let's go ahead and roll with tonight's market focus. >> tom: investors were in a stock buying mood thanks to the big cell phone deal, but it was energy that led the broad market. we start with at&t. as darren reported, its $39 billion effort to buy t-mobile looks to increase services and subscribers. the stock responded nicely, up more than 1%. since september, the stock has traded in a $2 range between $28 and $30 per share. one of the losers if the at&t/t- mobile deal goes through could be sprint nextel. shares sank almost 14%, giving up all of their recent gains that were had when sprint was the subject of buyout rumors

we're seeing honda increase their incentives, nissan has a very aggressive program. toyota has been aggressive. so almost every manufacturer has something, and it varies tremendously. it's certainly tactically driven and it is still iting business. >> susie: what about on the credit side, for someone that does need financing, is it getting easier to get a loan or is it still pretty tough? >> susie, it's gotten much easier. the big driver of the recovery in 2010 was the restoration of credit. the change in 2011 is we're now seeing an improving environment for sub prime. so last year prime and near prime were more normal, and this year we're starting to see the sub prim segment come along and that's very important for our industry. >> susie: all right, interesting information. thank you so much, for coming on the program tonight. >> thank you, susie. >> susie: we've been speaking with mike maroone of autonation. >> susie: guess what's picking up steam on wall street in a big way? if you're thinking initial public offerings, or ipos, you're correct. after a few quiet ye
