the commute and then the rest of the bay area mid to late morning hours up in the north bay. ill watching the creeks and streams reside here. with all that water. we do have a full moon. it's a high tide and so we're looking at that exacerbated flooding in parts of the bay. so until noontime, kind of dicey up there in santa rosa, the high tide occurs at 1022. at just over seven feet. so once again, some pretty dangerous areas here. we picked up over an inch, an inch and a half of rain in some spots. and then you add on on the king tides here. so still some problems around the base. make sure you're aware of that. if you're out and about today. here's a look at that partly cloudy start. and then a few more clouds as we get into the afternoon. and then here comes that rain. it's a cold front, a typical cold front that will sweep through the north bay through about 8:00, and then it continues on the move towards the east bay and south bay throughout the mid-morning hours , exiting the bay before noontime and allowing for just a little bit of rain. not that much. the rainfall amou

we've got heavy rain in the north bay. you can see a line of showers. this is a level one system. it's progressive. it's going to sink to the south and east within the next hour to two hours in oakland and san francisco. but you're not going to see this kind of rain. you will see some good downpours. but look how it's coming down in penngrove, glen ellen, highway 12, santa rosa, highway one, back westward towards the coast, and you notice the rain gets a little bit lighter. lakeville highway moving to the south. but we will have those downpours throughout the morning. the morning commute will be a soggy one from marin through oakland and san francisco at about 8:00, and you can see the line of light rain up towards fairfield, vacaville, where we have some fog. it's cloudy, it's milder from san jose to livermore this morning, and we've got fog at quarter mile visibility in livermore, half mile in concord. the breezy winds with the passage of the cold front as we go through the late morning hours. so it's not a big deal, but

live doppler seven, north bay rain and peninsula light sprinkles. also pushing into the east bay. is a level one system. it's with us for the next couple of hours. then it lifts to the north. we get a break before the heavier system arrives later. so not all of this is reaching the ground. but we have wet pavement, we have breezy winds throughout the day, and the bulk of the activity will be in the north bay. so rainfall amounts through 11:00 tonight, anywhere from a couple hundredths for most of us to three quarters of an inch. in santa rosa. we have our high surf advisory takes us through tomorrow. these waves will increase our coastal flood watch, which is because of the king tides. that continues to monday. so you can count on that flooding. but this is what we're worried about. the wind watch headed into a high wind warning along the coast in the purples, the valleys of the east bay, the coastal north bay, the san mateo coast where winds could be in excess of 60 miles an hour. with the heavy rain, we already have a flood watch that has been extended into sunday, where we're l

the biggest impact of these storms will be in the north bay, although we'll see rain across the entireay area. weekend. rains could already start to saturate the soil start to make the creeks rise. and there's real concern about some of the rivers monday and tuesday will be the strongest and wettest of the days. but the concern to the rivers, especially for the north bay. well, the main stem rivers probably okay, but some of the other rivers such as the russian river guernville could reach the minor flood stage. 34 1% chance of that. some of the other creeks and streams also definitely worth watching monday tuesday, the strongest storms across the bay area. and then there is the fresh snow in the sierra nevada. so we're looking at rain. how much rain quite a bit in the north bay. that's the greatest amount would be close to 5 inches in some of the north bay mountains. so not a whole lot this weekend, but the most again in the north bay as we go through time. also snow in the sierra nevada. so it's going to be very beautiful, but we'll certainly have the snow temperature wise. we're goi

by the afternoon, the north bay is catching a break. evening commute, pretty much all of the bay area will be seeing that rain wrapping up. and mike, you're getting reports of a crash that cleared from highway to interstate 80. important. it's not this part of i-80, which is the bay bridge toll plaza. that's fine and normal for the morning on monday. we're looking farther back on the upper east shore freeway. the crash and traffic break both successfully cleared from san pablo without any significant slowing. it's green there. you see that? we do have some slowing north of there, highway 37. and then we have the green highlighting at the top. wet roadways in the north bay. kari talked about and fog along the over on the right side highway for benicia bridge and through the north bay watch. contra costa county will be impacted, possibly down 580 out of the altamont. this looks like there's less slowing, but police activity still registers south. 280 at westborough, coming down through south san francisco. got my eyes on it. don't have a l

there were even a few lightning strikes in the north bay. really petering out. you'll see very light rain falling over parts of the east bay, mainly south of sacramento. and tomorrow, if you have plans to go out, if you are not in the north bay, most of the day will be dry. temperatures will start off in the 50s. 55 in san francisco, oakland, san jose. we could have some patchy, dense fog and some of the valleys, and especially along the coast. and then you'll notice tomorrow afternoon some spotty showers, mainly in the north bay. but we won't rule out a shower on the peninsula, although it does look dry in the south bay where temperatures will be mild. san jose high of 69, san francisco 63, oakland 65 degrees. but after tomorrow, late tomorrow night at around 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. tuesday is when you do not want to be outside. we will % rainfalls up to an inch or more in the north bay. possible thunderstorms winds up to 45mph. dangerous surf and coastal conditions with a high surf warning in effect and also a coastal flood warning. in addition,

rain tomorrow morning and then that system kind of stalls and hangs out, keeps bringing rain to the north bay, so on again, off again showers throughout the day friday in sonoma county. most of the rest of the bay doesn't get much until right about now. the commute home tomorrow, a little bit after that and then the storm starts to get serious. the rainfall intensity will pick up tomorrow night in the north bay and then in the overnight hours it's going to get everybody. look at this line. this gets us from friday night at 11:00. watch it come through in the predawn hours and everybody will get widespread steady rain there and as we get to sunrise, the real show happens. it was almost like sleight of hand. one cold front came through that looked like the main event and just as that winds down at sunrise, it is replaced by the actual main event. this is what i want everybody to be ready for saturday. that's going to be heavy rain that comes through in brief downpours and have gusty wind as it does. let's look at the time, 7 a.m. north bay's in it, but you've been in it a while by this point. l

we've got light rain falling over our north bay coast as well as down. it looks like along pacifica as well as half moon bay and hit or miss light showers over the bay at this time. into the sierra we've got snow falling. do expect the snow to hover right around 5000ft. and that's where the winter storm warning, as we talked about before the break, goes until tomorrow evening. here's a look at the timeline on this. notice we've got a lot of gray over the bay area by 5:00 in the afternoon. lake county and the north bay likely to have steadier rain, which means it could impact your evening commute. central and south bay will call for hit or miss scattered showers, very similar to what we're dealing with right now and then into the evening hours. this is the front and you can see for yourself. we've got moderate and heavy pockets of rain there. 11:00 as we go through the overnight hours, it is going to march through the central and south bay and then into tomorrow morning. it is still coming down. we are looking at 1 to 2, maybe even three inches of rainfall

and that's what we already saw tonight. >> the north bay hit hard by storms slamming the bay area. a tree came crashing down on anderson road and forest ill just before 7 friday night. an hour later, a car slid off a highway. 101 on-ramp and had to be towed. a flood watch is in effect for the north bay until sunday afternoon. the national weather service warning of possible flooding rising creeks and streams santa rosa fire marshal warning drivers to heed to the potential road. closure signs. the flooded signs. >> not attempt to drive through those flooded roadways. if they do exist. >> water quickly accumulated in several areas of mendocino avenue. one of the driveways to santa rosa high schools started to flood and at this taco bell, the water levels only continue to rise in the parking lot. some who experienced the last major storm 3 weeks ago worried this one will pack the same punch a bit. yeah, i got cause. flooded before. so. >> i can every about that yet. >> the wind is a major concern which could cause more trees to come down and possible. power outages to prepare. people

until noon and all of the communities that are in the north bay counties are included. not because of the intensity of the rain that is about to come our way but much more so because of how saturated the ground is from the previous systems that have already come through. so if you look at the first alert doppler, you can see the system that is about to come through now on the futurecast, there's your line of rain tomorrow and we look at this and detail the last visit, but here is one more play through. that is tomorrow morning, sunrise, it is coming through for just about everybody and that should clear by 1:00 tomorrow, look at the rainfall totals on this, they are not huge. but, it is enough, close to about half an inch of rain. about half an inch in the north bay on the high side of things, and quarter of an inch south from there and this is a garden-variety rainmaker but, the preceding conditions are what matter on this in terms of the concern for the flood watch in the north bay. there's one other thing on this system tomorrow that we should discuss and that is the

the rain is moving towards the north bay right now, and it will stay in the north bay over the next few hours. here's a look at live doppler seven satellite radar. lots of cloud cover all around the bay area. we're also seeing some lightning strikes off the north bay coast. about 14 lightning strikes right now, and some light rain moving in towards the north bay. it's a level one light storm on our exclusive storm impact scale. we'll see rain and showers tonight. then we get a break during the morning and then more showers tomorrow afternoon. this does mean slick roads and there is that high surf warning now. dangerous conditions at the beaches. so even by 8:00 tonight, most of the rainfall generally north of the golden gate bridge. and then as it slides south, it kind of falls apart. and then we'll see another round tomorrow afternoon. and then we have a level two storm moving in very late monday night into tuesday. rainfall estimates vary from a few hundredths of an inch to in the south bay to over half an inch up to an inch in parts of the north bay. more rainfall totals for you in t

come up to the north bay and take of look at the numbers right there. the counties, that is flood watch tomorrow that goes from the morning to the early afternoon. and it is primarily because you are going to get some additional rain. this is how much is falling tomorrow. in the last visit, we timed out the rain, put the rainfall totals on here. while they are not huge in their own right, the ground is pretty saturated here in the north bay. streams and creeks. that is one thing to keep in mind in terms of tomorrow's weather. let's come back out here to the coast now. that is still a surf advisory. so that areas showing up in pink, that will stay in effect until tomorrow morning. thankfully, we can see the wave heights now are starting to come down. they are not nearly as intense as they were. as we play that forward, most of the wave energy has already come ashore in the pacific northwest. for the most part, a decrease in wave energy coming toward the coast. that is good news. but you still have to get to tomorrow morning before we are done entirely. y

it's a freeze warning that is in the north bay for the north bay hills in the north bay, interior valleyslso a freeze warning down in the santa clara eastern hills. so that's particularly cold there. but was a frost advisory across the entire bay area. pretty much and that all expires at 10 o'clock this morning. so it's chilly start pretty much wherever you start out. temperatures right now. some areas in the 30's like 35 in san paulo, alto and 37 in concord, dublin has hit the freezing mark 32 degrees. there. 38 vacaville. 35 from fairfield is saying alina. tips to santa rosa. so it's chilly. 33 at calistoga. here are some clouds streaming in our direction will see increasing clouds today through the evening and even a chance tomorrow of some new year's raindrops for parts of the north bay. just a chance, perhaps. and then it clears out, dries out little bit. and then here comes the next system that comes in for everywhere across the bay area on friday, light to moderate rain. and then guess what? high pressure builds in and it's dry for quite a spell temperatures this afternoon mid 50's

and that's how it all started for folks in november when they have that excessive rain in the north bay. not expecting as much, but we're still talking about maybe 3, maybe 5 inches of rain, the possibility of some flooding along some of the minor creeks and streams in the north bay. maybe see some toward geyserville along the russian river. so we're gonna watch out overnight tonight and tomorrow is that heavy rain begins to come down. we've got astronomical high tide that is coinciding the same time as the rain comes in and that's going to cause some troubling. got a 7 foot tide as we look toward tomorrow morning. that's gonna hold that water back from being able flow into many, much of the bay and off along the coastline. that means that probably amplify some of the flooding. if we do see that overnight tonight. all right. let's take a look at the storm and has really begun to put itself together. that's going to be a monster storm rolling in the bay area. see 2 areas of low pressure on the backside of it. one off the coastline of washington. and then that secondary low for the south.

north bay valley locations, as well as parts of the inner east bay.league, says livermore looks good, but pleasanton patchy, dense fog this morning. here's a look at the rainfall amounts we're expecting as we get into this system that will arrive monday morning and move out. monday looks like late in the day we'll call right about sunset or so, but anywhere from a quarter inch to an inch of rainfall. and then we're going to be drying out for at least a few days. a little bit of snow coming to the sierra as well on monday. if you have travel plans and you're headed towards lake tahoe, something to watch out for. an advisory for travel likely to be posted by the national weather service. here's the timing on the system. there it is. still back in there. today is going to be a dry day. a little bit of a ridge over california at this time. it's going to break down system moves in the timing on this 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. it could slow down just a little bit and miss the morning commute could speed up a little bit, but right now it looks like it's going

and then we're getting the back half of it clearing out by 9:00 in the north bay. but notice from the east bay to the south bay still looking at some pretty good downpours, but sunshine moving in behind it. we've got dry northerly winds, so a big change from the gusty south winds this morning to that drier air behind. and that's going to set the stage for a frost advisory for tomorrow morning. rainfall rates now coming down quickly. anywhere from about a half inch in the next hour or two total. in the north bay you notice about a third in oakland. so the rain not particularly impressive, but the short period of time that it's going to fall with the gusty winds creating that highlighted area really around the entire bay right through the first half of the morning hours. and then by the later morning hours, things really begin to settle down. but notice that rain shadow effect of the south bay, just about a 4/100 in santa clara, and that wind advisory exempt for the santa clara area, 4 to 8in of snow in the mountains. so with the breezy winds, low 60s sunshine on the

the north bay will exceed a half an inch of rain while the rest of us will stay below that. efinitely the bigger winners will be our neighbors up north. you can see the showers slowly meandering through the rest of the day. here's the view at around 09:00am this morning when some of our heaviest of rain will reach south of the golden gate and into the rest of the bay area. after that point afternoon hours begin to calm down a little bit. shower activity. well, diminishing by the time we reach sunset tonight and then the rest of the forecast after today looks to be dry until saturday of this next weekend. tp yet again. so this low exits, the region high builds in yet again just for a few days before another active really ends to december an end to the year. now, temperatures today are going to be on the cooler side, mostly in the 50's, although vacaville only at 48 degrees today, tomorrow starts dry trend that carries us through the last day of fall on friday. winter technically kicks off on saturday and does so the return of rain for the bay and snow in the sierra right. >> n

the weekend rain totals from now until saturday evening, 2 to 3 inches around the valleys in the north bayut an inch of rain elsewhere in the bay area. but we could see maybe 5 inches of rain in our higher peaks here. but with all that rain in the north bay, a flood watch will go into effect this afternoon until sunday night. all those rivers, creeks and streams will be doing stories about up storm preps because the ground is already so saturated from all the recent rain we got to. so just keep that in mind. if you live near those areas and then we have king tides and how that could impact underpasses in parking lots. i get flooded mix with high surf as well. the dangerous surf conditions. so there's a lot going on in the weather center. the other part of the story are the high winds. we have a high wind warning along our coastline pockets of the east bay, a wind advisory for much of the bay area. so we're going to start to see the winds pop around the late afternoon. you can see 30 miles per hour along the coast, but them they take you through the evening. this is when that strong band of

the freeze warnings up for the north bay for the north bay mountains and also for the north bay inland valleys and also for the eastern foothills of the san jose area in the santa clara hills. so then there's the advisory. okay. advisories across just about the rest of the bay area except for san francisco and the shoreline of the peninsula. those advisories and warnings. they all are set to expire today at 10 o'clock. so we're in for a treat because right now we're still chilly. it'll start to warm up right now. it's 39 in dublin starting to warm up. it was 33 earlier. 39 fillet whole 34 in calistoga finally up from freezing. and 39 degrees in santa rosa. okay. the forecast model shows clear skies for us now. but the clouds increase and by tomorrow afternoon, there could be some new year's raindrops, but only in the north bay, not the rest of the bay area. just a chance of those raindrops and then we dry it out a little bit. and here comes friday. rain light to moderate rain for everyone across the bay area and in the sierra nevada snow. so we need some more fresh powder. and by golly

an inch even for the north bay. cruz might get just a little over an inch here overnight, and then the rest of us less than a quarter. here are the wind speeds right now 20 to 30 plus. so right below that wind advisory, no wind advisories in effect, but just enough where it could cause some concern for some trees. after all, we already have seen some rain. the winds die off quickly once that system rolls through. and then here's what we can expect with the coastline. so we do have these dangerous waves. keep in mind that high surf advisory remains in place all the way through sunday, so breakers could be 20 to 30ft. and then of course, we're keeping an eye on the sierra. we've got this winter weather advisory. this will be in place till noon tomorrow. we're going to see a wintry mix pass through. could see an additional accumulation of about seven inches overnight. and then saturday and sunday we see more action rolling through again. right now it looks like a lot of the heavier rain is more focused to the pacific n

so up towards the north bay, guerneville, santa rosa by 8 p.m. and then we should see it slip down here towards the peninsula, east bay and throughout the north bay with some heavier pockets. by 1130 tomorrow night. and then we'll get into that rainfall down there towards the south bay by 3 a.m. on thursday. and then most of this should get out of here by 7:00 in the morning on thursday. we should just be left with some spotty rain, maybe an isolated thunderstorm chance through the rest of the morning and just a spotty shower through thursday night. then here comes the second one. this is kind of the main event of everything it develops on friday out here in the pacific with that atmospheric river. then this should slam us here as we head through saturday's forecast. so let's break apart the rain totals thursday. we're looking at about a half inch overall throughout the bay area, but the north bay would be in for half to one inch. and then saturday one day totals. we're talking about 1 to 3in for marin, napa, sonoma counties. i think on average we

taper off and it looks like it's going to remain in north bay severe in the north bay, north of the golden gate could see some unsettled weather throughout the day and night. so moving east now, the showers mostly cloudy for us in the bay area around lunchtime. you can see that more rain arrives. santa rosa area, sonoma county and parts of napa county, cloudy skies for the rest of the bay area. possible stray shower around dinner time. but here is 11:00am until saturday morning in the overnight hours, heavy rain expected until saturday morning. so hopefully stay indoors. don't be out there. if you have, if you don't have to definitely stay indoors this tonight and saturday morning. so here's that. daytime highs, low 60's upper 50's. and when i come back, we will be talking about you. no flood concerns. high wind warning and some snow in the sierra michael. >> thanks, gayle. good morning, everyone. taking a look right now we're dealing with some different accidents across the bay up or i should say actually over in the east bay. this is the first one you can see it's right at the connector

over the next several days and, of course, as usual, the the heaviest amounts will occur in the north bayof rain on top of what has fallen and what is falling now. the rest of the bay area, talking about a couple inches of rain around san francisco and oakland, concord and fairfield, lower amounts in some of the rain-shadowed spot, just over 1 1/2 inches for redwood city, around an inch for livermore and san jose and in the santa cruz mountains you expect heftier amounts there, over 2 1/2 inches of rain the official forecast for ben lomond. i'll show you forecast model data coming up at 5:30 and some of the variability we're dealing with trying to figure out exactly what's going to fall where. we've got an unsettled forecast through monday and then things really die down and dry out, temperatures right around 60 degrees for the entire bay area tuesday through the end of next week. there is another system potentially heading our way a week from tomorrow, saturday of the prechristmas weekend. we'll watch that once we get out of this current unsettled weather pattern. >> thanks, paul. >>> wh

like vianey mentioned, the north bay could get hit the hardest. plenty of people preparing for the water and the wind, and that's where it gets tricky. let's bring in nbc bay area's velena jones, who joins us this evening in mill valley, velena the wind and rain are expected to pick up in the overnight hours, particularly here in the north bay. the storms anticipation is making spots like this sandbag location, popular prepping spots. you got to do it sort of like, you know, laying bricks with every field, sandbag. her hopes he's a scoop closer to preventing his lakeville home from flooding. he tells us prior storms have repeatedly damaged his garage. the water just goes over that and floods the hole. and when the garage was built, they didn't think about that. we were we were swabbing out water and from the inside of the garage, you know, so this is going to be an experiment to see how well it works. with potential wind gusts up to 55mph and a flood watch in effect for napa, marin and sonoma counties. officials in sonoma say they're most concerned

but with all the rainfall we are seeing now a flood advisory for parts of the north bay, east bay and the peninsula until 415 in the morning, you could see some minor flooding in low lying areas and also some of the roadways or poor drainage areas. in addition, there's also still a flood warning for the russian river near hopland. i'll have more details coming up. dan. >> okay, francis, thanks very much. we'll touch base shortly. here's a live look at sfo right now. nearly 400 flights have been delayed, 11 canceled altogether in the post-christmas rush today, the weather is putting a damper on things not just locally, but in many places across the country, with snow and severe storms affecting travel, people on the road are taking care to those returning from the holidays in the snowy sierra are dealing with some slow moving traffic. chains are required on highway 50 from twin bridges to meyers and on interstate 80 from truckee to kingvale. both are open and moving tonight, as you can see, but it's just careful driving. you can follow along as the forecast evolves over the next few da

few downpours in the north bay. and then as we look at about 11:00, it's exiting the east bay and we're left with a few showers throughout the day on monday. this is monday morning. you can see them passing through monday afternoon and then overnight monday into early tuesday. this is the level two system that will could bring some flooding problems up in the north bay. beneficial rain for the east bay. rainfall amounts throughout today. anywhere for a couple hundredths to a third of an inch through 11:00. we get more in the north bay then we're adding on monday night into tuesday, upwards of two inches in the north bay, a third of an inch in the south bay. so this is our other break. it's on hanukkah where we will be dry a few peeks of sun, christmas day, those downpours ending on christmas eve allowing for that break. middle of the week 60s today. look how mild and that rain ends. so. bulk bulk of the day is dry. after that we've got more showers on tap for the rest of the and protecting our environment are both pa

with the rain covering the north bay and moving into san francisco. ts of the east bay, with much of contra costa county seeing at least some light sprinkles and then moving into hayward and fremont, and then a little closer look down the peninsula where we're seeing the light showers in palo alto. it's going to be moving into sunnyvale within the next few minutes, so we are seeing some light rain to start out our friday morning. but this is not the storm system we've been talking about. this is kind of the appetizer because we are going to see some heavier rain moving in tonight, all connected with that tropical moisture that's being pumped into the bay area. yes, we call that the pineapple express or an atmospheric river. it't'a steady stream of moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere that also brings in sometimes high winds and heavy rain. so we're going to see that in the forecast for tomorrow. today it's mainly light showers, just kind of off and on with the north bay getting the most as we time it out. look at these bright colors here. thi

we are looking at the heaviest rain right now across the north bay communities and it is just beginningin on the rain and i would say in the next 30 minutes or so , but north bay communities, you have seen some heavier rounds of downpours and you will continue to see that for about the next hour or so. the winds are definitely the biggest issue currently, 25 to 45 miles an hour, but we have seen guests on top of the mountain words, upwards of 50 to 60 and will be a very breezy and windy start to the morning is the frontal boundary moves ever have. the wind will continue to shift south with the frontal boundary, but again it is not going to be anything too much longer than the early afternoon hours and not to sabres and conditions will not stick around this afternoon. but it will not be the 45 plus mile an hour gusts we were seeing this morning and wider conditions will continue to arrive overnight tonight and into early tomorrow which is great news for allowing us to enjoy some sunnier skies and drier conditions tomorrow afternoon. it is a quick mover, quickly moving across the bay area

but the north bay, you could remain unsettled throughout the day and evening with us for the rest of the bay area. mostly cloudy skies. this is 06:00pm now. so you start to see some moderate down. corey is in santa rosa a but here is 11:00pm. that's when we see the heaviest bands rain start to move in and it will remain unsettled until the end of the overnight hours into saturday morning. now with this system, it doesn't look like it's going to stall like last month. and that caused all that flooding. all that trouble in the north. most of the north bay. and it looks like saturday afternoon is the time to get outdoors. the roads will be wet, though and sunday looks mostly dry until another system is expected to arrive late sunday night into monday. but let's talk about rain totals from now until saturday evening. we're talking 2 to 3 inches in the north bay, 5 inches in the higher elevation an inch for the rest of the bay area. the north bay we're keeping an eye on. that's why we have a flood watch that goes into effect this afternoon. you can see all this area in green. we're watchin
