we are starting off with a quick check of doppler in the northbay.we have lighter conditions near st. helena. as we go near vallejo, that is where the heavy pockets are. we had reports of lightning strikes in the northbay . we have heavy pockets into livermore. we are tracking to the east. for our friends in the south bay, it is similar. anywhere from saratoga into san jose. is where we will see the heaviest downpours throughout the morning. we are taking a quick look at the reason why this is happening. we have this major system is backed for by an atmospheric river. we will catch a break as we go to the evening hours tonight and wednesday. this is as we going to thursday and friday. we are more energy pushing its way in. we are not finished with the rain yet. this is the beginning . we will talk about that. how are the roads looking? >>> you did mention the rain and high winds, so we have a high wind advisory in effect for bridges in the altamont pass. we do have an accident on 280 southbound near san jose. the left lane is affected. you can expect

it really is stubborn in the east bay northbay, which is right now, already dropping to 39 . let's take a look at what we expect as we head through the next couple days. tonight we are going to see a few cracks in the cloud cover and more of a mix of clouds and sunshine on tuesday, but enough energy in the atmosphere for a few showers to make a run into the northbay tuesday afternoon. these are going to be much more miss than hit, and it is only about a 20% to 30% shower and if you get a few sprinkles, is not going to last very long and alone at a do much more than a trace of rainfall, but is a chance. that chance is going to continue with and thursday but overall though, we're talking about those limited shower chances and just north of the golden gate in the next good chance of rain for everybody is going to lineup into monday gh esday, but that is on down the line. when he.rain, not just to alleviate the drought conditions, but to wash him at the smoke and atmosphere. it is a wetter than normal pattern to the 6 to 10 day outlook and even stronger signal to a letter the nor

northbay, even around the central bay, we may see patchy fog to start off the morning. dry day, 30s and 40s to start. a colder start to tomorrow. by lunch day, mid-50s, increasing high clouds. as early as the evening, we will see they are firing up, picking up showers offshore tomorrow night. we can see they make a bit of a comeback then. into thursday, look at that. scattered showers, passing through. but things start to wrap up in intensity heading into thursday night, friday, for the northbay, and watching that area there. notice the highs, friday, 9:00, likely through saturday morning , we could see a sustained rain from areas north of san francisco. that's the window we will have to watch. at the same time, gusty winds as the front moves through new year's eve day. 5:30, rain starts to push out. the timing could work out where we could start to see some clearing skies in time to ring in the new year. but the rain totals, once you add things up, again, thursday, incoming weather system is nice. later tomorrow night, into thursday morning, not too heavy. 1/4 of an in

one first glimpse at the doppler shows the impressive line of heavy land marching through the northbay. we got 10th of an inch since about 5:00 a.m. this morning and the organized one, which shows a beautifully when we look at it and giving santa rosa in the north they some decent rain at this point, that rain will march its way south somebody , petaluma is ceding the leading edge, but if we come for the wide view and put this into the high-resolution futurecast, we see the line get down to the golden gate. by 10:00 and 11:00 this morning, we see that. we got for tens of rain, with in a three-hour period in the northbay and we see totals similar as this gets down to the heart of the be. even if you have light rain, you have not gotten the main event for the city in oakland and richmond. that arrives and that gets down to the south bay by the time we get into the early afternoon. it intensifies by the time it gets here. we will look at that in time out the storm. we will talk about intense snow and this last. we have the first alert forecast in a few minutes. >>> wnba star brittney grin

you should plan on rain on friday but the way this is coming together is friday's focus is more northbayywhere else. then we get to the main event on saturday. you could see how different this looks. now you could see the structure and what the atmospheric river looks like. no doubt if you and watching for a while you could pick these out. pausing right thamth bee you cod see the stream of t here. the pacific is pointing a hose at the bay with perfect aim with steady rain. looking at the beads of red showing you where this gets heavier. back to the beginning. saturday at 2:00 a.m., it takes its sweet time. working its way down everyone gets in on the act. it doesn't clear the south bay until we have gotten the probably early afternoon. that's about an inch and a half on saturday. when you add on top of that all the rest of the rain we have gotten with the totals beginning to get impressive for the remainder of what is now another 2 1/2 day.. that's why there's a flood watch. even though there's a flood watch there's a lot of wayne we aren't at risk of any major flooding. i think when a l

brains can start northbay here.nna work its way over the entire bay in the very early predawn hours of tuesday. that right there is some of the most impressive ring to see that line? that's can work across the entire bay between 2 o'clock and 5 o'clock. that's when we expect to see the heaviest rain and the strongest wind from this storm. before most of us get up on tuesday ÃÃand as we play this forward by the time we get to the 8 o'clock hour ÃÃso however much a tuesday morning commute there's gonna be ÃÃ considering we're coming out off of christmas weekend ÃÃ the majority of the rain will be passing by the late part of it. the streets are to be very wet. on tuesday morning. but the majority of the rain is done by 8 o'clock and by tuesday afternoon, you can see breaks of blue skies. most of this is happening at a very condensed window of time. so, that's a lot of rain there to get. it basically right. we are going to pick up on average about an inch and and a half and 2 and a half inches of rain. heavier northbay

when that comes through, and localized flooding of some of the streams and creeks in some of the northbay mountains, and certainly down in the santa cruz mountains. look at rainfall totals from this. for the remainder of friday, it is fairly manageable, but as we go through saturday, watch numbers really spike from that wave that comes through. so, the timeframe that would probably be the most impactful from all of this will be saturday, from the late morning, probably into the late evening, because we'll seal the deal with residual effects, with localized flooding , and some of the streams and creeks overflowing their banks. new year's day, we get a break. but i just want you to see what's coming in the pacific into the first week of january but there's another storm, and here's the potential for a more impressive one. that one is focused on the middle of next week. and there's another one after that. we won't try and get too specific, but we are going to give you a heads up. let's make sure we are prepared for saturday. that is our first alert weather day. keep in mind, it's going to st

the system that comes in from the north late saturday into sunday will pick up totals in the northbayre's a look at early sunday morning when showers become more scattered. we will see some cloudy skies, a slightly warmer day on sunday, then looking at those showers lingering into monday. rainfall totals anywhere on saturday and sunday from a third of an inch in san francisco to about an inch up in santa rosa. we could see anywhere from 2-5 inches in the mountains from monterey southward. looking at anywhere from a half inch to may be an inch into our east bay. i really think the moisture coming up from the south will focus on the east and south for that first system. there's a winter storm warning in effect through monday. you can see 2.5 feet for kirkwood. 11 inches and climb. a liberal one on our storm impact scale. we are talking about temperatures only in the low 50's. once again we have a freeze warning, frosty temperatures with low 30's. looking at a great day on sunday but less rain lingering into monday. a break into next week. would dry out. -- we dry out. kristen: be carefu

it becomes more widespread into the afternoon hours with heavier pockets up into the northbay. that continues into friday and even into saturday. keep that in mind we apeken today are sticking in the mid to low 50s often the east inland hills. it is warmer in certain microclimates. we will warm up into the 60s as we head into friday and saturday, all throughout the santa clara valley. >>> the southwest airline saga continues. the airline has canceled more than 2500 flights nationwide. that includes 336 here at the bay area airport. san jose and oakland airports are seeing the worst of it . look at the canceled flights. as you can see here luggage has been piling up along with frustrations. this is video from baggage claim and oakland airport yesterday. instead of people waiting for their bags, the bags are waiting for people. according to flight aware, 124 flights have been canceled in addition to 22 delays. here is a look at some of the unclaimed baggage at san jose's airport. flyers say they waited for hours only to find out their bags were not there. this morning 147 flights

this will likely be a northbay storm. that is because of the way it is oriented. we are taking these days and adding them up. there's 2 1/2 inches by the time we get to saturday. that's why there is a flood watch. here is the context on this. the flood watch should raise eyebrows and awareness. we are not looking at significant risks like we have in winters past when the russian river starts to go through. that is not happening here but it does give us enough rain that streams and creeks could overflow at some banks. we had that on tuesday and we will probably do it again on saturday. put it all together that is why saturday is the first alert day. it won't be as windy so there is that benefit, but it will be as messy in terms of the rain. new year's day is the break like we were talking about a second ago . than the next storm hits. monday and tuesday of next week will be busy again as well. those storms are looking impressive, but it is still several days out. the pacific has woken up and remembered where we lived. >> i just woke up to new year's day is on sunda
