a large power pole came crashing over the northbound lanes of highway 17. this forced the chp to close those lanes at granite creek. a large power line or a cable line remains on the side of the highway of the southbound lanes. those lanes are closed at sugar loaf. it was a nightmare for cars that were stranded at the time of the closure. the chp turned those cars around so they could go back north on highway 17. the big rigs, well, there's no room for them to turn around, so they're stuck there until the crews can reopen the highway. caltrans earth movers are on the way to take care of the mud slide. and i also heard some chainsaws, so no doubt some trees came crashing down over highway 17. there's been no rainfall on the santa cruz mountains through the entire morning. we've been here since 3:00. a light drizzle coming down if you're going to go to the other side of the hill, may as well turn around and find another route, because highway 17 is closed in both directions. just on the other side of the summit. we're at the base of the santa cruz mountains, i

lanes we're in gilroy. they are under three feet of water. they're almost up to the guardrail northboundnes are entirely blocked off. we are at the 25 overpass and you can see to the left there, there is a whirlpool. this is starting to drain but it is causing a major traffic nightmare here. the northbound lanes of 101 is at a complete stand still. those trucks have been standing there for about 30 minutes. and one of the reasons is because they have to get off on this exhibit here. they have to go up and around to the east and that down there, down this road that we're on right now there, is also water rushing over and we see now that police are blocking it in both directions. it is some of the many headaches that people, that drivers and homeowners have been facing here in south santa clara county. in morgan hill the biggest hit came in the afternoon, sending dozens scrambling. we followed two people. >> our restaurant is going to overflow. we had to kick everybody out. the roads are closing down. >> the clogged storm drain sending an unwelcomed customer through the entrance. >> we had

we even saw a whirlpool in the northbound lanes, the traffic was at a standstill for miles. some cal fire crews, we also saw, stuck. they were on their ways to calls. but luckily for these folks, this fire crew was table to get to a the boat, with get it into the water to rescue them from the second floor of their homes. you can see the whole first floor is underwater. >> the storm drain that's creating quite a large whirlpool, those are the kind of things we're concerned with our personnel getting stuck in there or any victims getting stuck in there. so we have to really assess what we're looking at and make sure we enter the water safely and recover all our personnel safely. >> they were able to take that time, because they knew the people inside were not in distress. they also saved the family dog. the battalion chief says the people may not have known how bad that flooding was, because it is too late. it's really hard to tell what's flooded in the dark. that's certainly what we're seeing out here on highway 25. a lot of folks not seeing that ponding on the roadway, just

there's a chp patrol car that's posted here on the on ramp to the northbound lanes of 680. now the chp says two massive trees toppled on the on ramp completely blocking the road. that happened about 4:30 this morning. it's not clear if it was wind that brought the trees down or if the ground was so saturated that the roots couldn't hold anymore. but it's ultimately going to be up to caltrans to remove the trees and get the ramp reopened. the problem is there's just so much storm damage in so many different areas caltrans crews are stretched a bit thin at this point. there is one caltrans crew that is down by the trees themselves but they are not actively removing them. so there is no firm eta on when exactly the on-ramp to northbound 680 is going to be reopened. now right now, chp is advising drivers if they need to get on northbound 680 and they normally jump on here at calaveras to go one on ramp south or north of this location in order to get onto the northbound lanes. in milpitas devin fehley, kpix5. >> you have good advice if you are out going to the grocery store or i

this is the northbound lanes of 17 and they're diverting traffic just about a mile up the road for people on to santa cruz highway. the backup goes all the way you can see then back, up over the hill on the summit. now as you said earlier, this is a story i'm very familiar with because this is traffic i've been sitting in for most of the day. it started about 10:00 this morning heading north on highway 17 when i was passed by a couple of police cars in pursuit. when we got to redwood estates we ended up -- you see what happens there. for those cars that were stuck behind that scene, they were there for as many as four hours. i talked to people who missed work, who missed classes, who were missing plane flights were there under the chp started turning cars around one by one electricity back of the line up turning them heading the opposite way on the northbound lanes. some people there for as many as four hours. complicating the matters up here, of course we have all these storms the last couple weeks. many of the side roads are closed because of mudslides. the chp was telling people you ca
