today a man in northeast iowa pleaded guilty to sex abuse charges involving a 14 year old girl. scott franzen pleaded guilty. he's 39 and from saint lucas in fayette county. court documents show franzen admitted to sexually abusing the girl. franzen faces up to 20 years in state-run care facilities do not inform residents or their families when a convicted sex offender is placed in them. but officials with the iowa department of human services say notifying people would violate state law, even though that information is publicly available. in 2012, governor branstad backed a bill to require facilities to make those kinds of notifications, but the bill did not pass. sex offender allegedly molested a 95 year old woman in a nursing home in pomeroy in 2011. some people in workers unions fear for the safety of residents and employees. firefighters in des moines pulled a man from a burning house this morning, but it was too late to save him. flames had already engulfed the back of the house on east ninth street in des moines when firefighters arrived just after four this morning. they
