winds northeasterly at 5 to 10. here's the big picture. satellite picture, radar combined. heaviest activity is along the coast. why? that's where the frontal boundary is. there are some showers and thunderstorms back to the west and these are what we are watching for the immediate metro area overnight and into tomorrow. let's go to live doppler 9,000 and we'll pinpoint some of the activity. again, around town, pretty quiet. you know, some showers off north of annapolis and some showers along the delmarva. these showers are back to the west. we'll put this into motion. these storms progress southeastward across 66 toward warnton. these showers hang around the bay between annapolis and gibson island. now we'll zoom in to a couple individual storms. no warnings on these storms yet, but we do know they have heavy rain fall rates and the potential for a little bit of hail. particularly in this storm, just to the north of leesburg, it is moving off to the south and east. we'll zoom into this storm. see this magenta here? a good indication there could be small hail. as you go nor

we had a northeasterly flow, brought moisture off the bay. things are shifting around high pressure moving into the area. to answer jessica's question, the high pressure is eating into the low that's been sitting just offshore or to our south and offshore. a front has been sitting, different ripples of energy along the front have allowed for showers along the shore. this is really the high pressure in action eating away at all that moisture uh, and really just kind of bringing us clearer skies. it's helping to funnel in warmer air. that's what we're dealing with this weekend as temperatures go from below average to just above. any is our first named storm of the season. ana is a tropical storm named as of 5:00 a.m. this morning. this storm is centered 1,010 miles east much the island. moving to the west at 16 miles per hour. not expected to have interest in the u.s., or no impact for a week or so. we'll keep you posted. ana, finally, halfway through august, the first named storm of the season. sunset 8:02. east wind on the bay at 5 to 10 knot

those fires that are burning up in california that track starts to make a north and i think in a northeasterly turn probably taking most of the moisture into arizona by the end of the week. only a slight chance they think that california could pick up some of that moisture. destructive winds for the baja peninsula and possibility of heavy rain and flooding for that location. out in the atlantic what could be erica, a strong possibility that this big mass here, about 500 miles east of the lesser antilles could be upgraded to a tropical depression and again take on the name erica. so there is the lesser antilles. greater then a 50% chance that that could happen so we're watching that storm very carefully. probably not until we get to the end of the week and weekend that it could move close to the eastern seaboard. for now though high pressure moving in. that'll wipe the skies clean. lots of sunshine i think throughout the day tomorrow as high pressure continues to move in. all of the white and i think that's kind of overdone. most of the clouds down through the carolinas. temperatures dropping f

it's sitting 400 miles south of nantucket and continue on the northeasterly trek for the next few days. it's going to be category one by sunday morning. winds go down to 85 miles an hour. right now we are looking 100 mile-an-hour winds moving off to the north at 23 miles per hour. again, by tonight that is when the ca mechb islands is going to get hit with the heaviest rain. although the winds aren't really the big concern here it's going to be the wave heights, ocean flow and rip currents. so really be the big deal up and down the east coast. here is what we're looking at dangerous surf, 12-18, 15-22 up through new england. we do have our tropical storm warnings that are in effect for the cape and islands, nantucket, martha vineyards. tonight will be the worst of it. then by tomorrow the storm will be sitting off to the north moving toward canada and we'll see really this situation get a lot better from south to north as the system continues to go further to the north. notice all this rain. we do have a thunderstorm watch box sitting down there in parts of the carolinas and maryland.

behind this, we have a little bit of a light northeasterly flow. that will keep us from hitting 90 today. here's what's happening with tropical storm danny. the latest statistics coming in at 11:00 this morning. still a rather disorganized tropical storm. a cluster of thundershowers circulating. 760 miles south of ocean city. moving northwest at about 11 miles an hour with sustained winds of 60 with gusts near 70. over the next day or so, it may increase in strength. by tomorrow afternoon, when it's right here off the outer banks, may become a weak hurricane. and remain a category one hurricane during the day on saturday. pa passes just east of ocean city. and then right near cape cod and nantucket and martha's vineyard, later on on saturday, perhaps late on saturday afternoon, then by sunday morning it races off to the north and east through eastern canada. so for today, hazy sunshine. rather humid. light breeze. highs upper 80s. and then tonight, becoming mostly cloud in the 70s by midnight. cloudy, maybe showers in the morning and passing shower

tomorrow winds will be northeasterly and cooler. we have 71 in town. there's the 74 from webster field. so southern saint mary's county muggy there and 63 from cumberland and martinsburg. 61 in culpeper. going to be a touch of fog in the cooler spots but generally a quiet morning with the dew point in the mid 6s higher than yesterday and a light southwesterly wind at five miles an hour. nationally we have high pressure in the northern plains. high pressure over us with a front in between. the storms from kansas and nebraska in to parts of chicago land to detroit. that's going to cause problems with air travel. this is a tropical issue that we are looking at. this area of disturbed weather is yet to be classified even a tropical depression but winds will become more favorable and allile sheer across that inhibiting the development. and then all of the computer guidance saying hey it will head to the east coast, but show you the models. the forecast models. some of them are real close to us. these are the western ones. but the majority take it off shore

we're looking at hurricane bill right now on the satellite and it is starting to make that northeasterly turn which means it will pass several hundred miles to the east of cape cod and the islands, but it will be the closest path to the u.s. and too close for comfort because as you mentioned, those surf will only get higher and the rip currents will become worse before it gets better by tomorrow. later tonight the storm will make a pass just to the east. it's about 300 miles to the south of nantucket. has been downgraded in the last advisory to a category one, 85 mph. still hang onto category one status tomorrow, then we should see this diminish some as it passes by nova scotia. the good thing is we're not going to be looking at strong wind gusts. he could see wind gusts upwards of 35-50 mph, but that would be the biggest concern. it will be the rough surf were dealing with over the next 24 hours. we have a few ray bans moving in. you will see some heavy showers go across the cape and the islands, mainly through the overnight and tomorrow morning. we're also dealing with a cold front tha
