the coast guard was on the scene immediately and first responders from all over northern virginia and. and maryland, along with federal resources. it was like something no one had seen before here at dca. this morning the same intensity is being delivered in order to recover every lost life and reunite them with their families. i had a chance to speak with the chairwoman of the ntsb this morning. they are mobilizing their investigatory efforts and hugely important. they also are on point supporting the families. but i offered her every resource available to us on both fronts to make sure that families understand that we are praying for them and we care for them and we can understand that this is a circumstance they would have never possibly imagined. and so with that as the top focus, we'll also support them in their investigation to make sure that what was understood to be a very routine approach with both crews in contact with air traffic control and yet, of course, something went massively wrong. and that's going to be the work that will be so important to make sure it never happen

it's in northern virginia, in arlington, which is directly across the river from the nation's capital. the access points to washington, d.c. it's very close to get in and out. there's a lot of members of congress who use this airport to get to the capital, because it's such a quick trip via car or even the metro rail. in fact, there was a great debate about shutting down this airport after nine over 11 because the flight path would take planes so close to the white house and the capitol. of course, you know, the u.s. capitol was the intended target of the fourth plane on nine over 11. and, of course, one plane hit the pentagon. but they really tightened up the rules about flying in and out of reagan national airport. i'm going to kind of give you some geography here to understand where we are. so over my right shoulder, that is where the runway is. but over my left shoulder here. this is the southern part of the potomac river, where the plane from wichita was coming in. it was coming up the river this way from the south. sometimes they approach from the south and take off to the north

massive weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, all of which we get here in northern virginia. so we were very concerned about that particular situation. so above my head are surviving for joyce, for the study in the south wing of the house as these date to 1775, when that addition was put on the house and in this part of the house, the floor framing survives almost entirely intact. as we move further north in the house where they caught less sun and it stayed damper for longer periods of time, the north side of the house we've we find less and less surviving from washington's lifetime. in fac under the new room, which was phase one of our project, and we'll go up and take a look at that in a moment. we had almost nothing surviving from the washington period. i am speaking specifically about first floor framing above of the floorboards of the first floor mount vernon is a new really well preserved with surviving 18th century fabric in the neighborhood of about 90% for permanent, permanent parts of the house. by that i mean doors, windows, wall, frame, but not things like roof
