the defendant is of course 28-year-old britney norwood. she is accused of killing a coworker inside of the bethesda store last march. montgomery county prosecutors allege norwood beat murray to death. norwood then tried to cover-up the murder by playing the victim and telling police the two women had been attacked by two masked men inside the store. the murder the alleged cover- up, it rocked the bethesda community and soon the fate of britney norwood is going to be in the hands of 12 people. 12 jurors. this selection process starts this morning. attorneys are looking at a jury pool that will probably be in the hundreds of people. this is a case that received lots of national media attention, so many prospective jurors will likely have heard all about this case. those jurors will be questioned to determine if they have developed any sort of biass about this case before the trial even begins. again jury selection starting this morning and coming up in about half an hour at 5:30, we will hear from a prosecuting attorney here in montgomery co

authorities believe that murray may have confronted norwood over stolen merchandise. during a break in the case today, state's attorney john mccarthy told me he was ax sounded at the number -- astounded at the number of 38, the number of people who were asked if they came to a conclusion as to whether britney norwood was guilty or innocent. as far as the jury pool is concerned now, 150 came in today, 150 were supposed to come in tomorrow, they want a total of 300 to try to choose 12 jurors and five alternates, shawn. >> paul, i know early on there were talk about britney norwood possibly use the insanity defense. did any of that come up today? >> reporter: that is not going happen for this simple reason, shawn. the defense attorneys had to file some paperwork with the court. if they intended to use that defense, that is the not criminally responsible defense. the reason for that is you have to give the prosecution enough time to hire doctors to examine norwood so they can make a defense of that as well. to say that, well, we don't believe that she's criminally insane.

norwood beat murray to death after murray found stolen merchandise in norwood's bag. now prosecutors say that norwood then tried to cover-up the murder by telling police that she, too, was the victim. that both of the women were attacked inside of the store and that they were attacked by two masked men. clearly she has since been charged with first degree murder. police believe that story was completely a fabrication, a cover-up. that murder the alleged cover- up and subsequent arrest really just rocked the bethesda community, which is going to make it hard for both the prosecution and the defense to settle on a 12-member jury panel. and that whole process is going to be starting today. should last for at least one full day. they are going to have to be questioning 300 potential jurors. that is how large the jury pool is, which is just a huge number for a murder trial. just goes to show you exactly how difficult attorneys on both sides believe it will be. to determine that 12 member panel. so jury selection starts today, but the whole trial is expected to last between
