he was headed to senator -- to san carlos but decided to land at novato and they lost contact. they searched all night and 3:00 this morning fires discovered a very remote grass fire and they decided the plane crash did touch off that fire. this is in a remote area near hicks valley road and that is a rural area of petaluma and they found the wreckage of the plane and still working on getting the fire out. it is 50 percent contained. they are stipulating it -- estimating it has burned 40 acres. they do not have a good visual so that is an estimate. we are in marin county where we will get updates. we will follow this story. stay with us. >> developing news, firefighters are trying to control junction fire close to yosemite national park. flames were spotted before 2:00 p.m. yesterday in an area close to a homeless camp. the fire grew so quickly 13,000 businesses and hopes everyoner advantage witnessed. officials say calm both is helping and 500 structures are threatened. highway 41 leading into the area is closed and the fire has burned 1,200 acres. san jose police were looking

this is north of novato in west marin county.b is also on its way, should be here in a couple of hours. now the faa tells us that this pilot was heading from brookings, oregon, to san carlos last night, where around 9:30 last night, the pilot radioed air traffic to control saying he was having engine trouble. he would try to land at nas field. then right after that, his aircraft disappeared from radar. marin county sheriff started a search because of the fog and the inability to fly their own search and rescue aircraft, it took them four hours to locate the wreckage. three of the hours to find the fire, another hour to find the wreckage within the fire. the marin county sheriff's department tells us this morning they've take an look at the wreckage, they believe looks like it exploded on impact. >> again, the plane is in really severe disrepair. it's in bad shape. and obviously at the time of impact, started a fire which created more detriment to the crime scene itself. >> reporter: again, no identity yet as far as who that pilot

the plane went down north of novato, west of petaluma. it caused about 40 acres of that remote wildland to catch fire. the pilot was en route from brookings, oregon, to san carlos on the peninsula. when around 9:30, he radioed air traffic control to say he was having engine trouble and would try to land here in marin. shortly after that call, his plane disappeared from radar. take a look at this image on the screen right now. you can see that green line. this is from the flight aware website. that green line represents his flight path. you can see how he deviated in the last moments, trying to find a safe place to land her. locals even heard the plane flying low, thought it was unusual. no one actually heard it crash. its final resting place, far away from nos field, a good seven miles to the west. >> what you need to know is that the fog last night, the heavy cloud cover, it was really, really difficult. to an steextent, normally we tro use our own helicopters and try to locate a plane under these type of circumstances. the cloud cover w

the plane was reported missing in novato last night. that is also where a large wildfire is burning right now believed to be connected to that plane crash. alex savage is there at the scene and alex we also hear the plane has just been found? >> reporter: yes, the marin county sheriff's office said just a short time ago they believe they have located the wreckage of this small plane that went down here in this rural area of west marin off hicks valley road. this is video of a brush fire that is believed to have been started by a plane when it clashed. it touched off this fire and they are working to get that fire which is 40 acres under control and a short time ago, it is happening on the i will hillside. the small plane reported having engine problems and they were able to track it using radar and at this point it is unclear how many people are on board that plane and what may have happened to them. they also got help from the air force, the civil air patrol, chp and marin county fire department and overnight, it was not an issue. it m

plane tried to make an emergency landing in novato last night but didn't make it. it went down in a rural part of marin county and it sparked a grass fire. john sasaki live at the peninsula with more on how the investigation is coming together. >> reporter: gasia, this is the san carlos airport where the plane that crashed was based. officials here at the airport tell me that they were called this morning by the faa to check and see if a certain plane was here. it was a plane involved in last night's crash in marin indeed it was not here. this afternoon our news chopper 2 flew over the crash site near hicks valley west of novato. you can see on the video that the plane is in the middle of the burned out area because the crash sparked a 32-acre wild land fire. a coroner's official said the pilot's body has been recovered although the person's identity has not been confirmed and likely won't be until sometime tomorrow. the plane is registered to a san carlos resident, and i found out that the man had sold to a family. search and rescue crews spent hours trying to fin
