is it fair to compare novavax to the mrna and their efficacy? >> i think it is.all measuring the same thing. globally we have fairly harmonized influences, taking a look at the type of disease we are trying to prevent. across otherible] vaccines. >> do you expect efficacy in the 90's? >> we don't know until we know. based upon what we did and preclinical nonhuman primates and first human trials, the immunogenicity data we have demonstrated has been at or above the levels of the moderna and pfizer. to you have an understanding of the side effects, did they increase, change? do you have a read on that yet? onwhat we have is a read side effects from earlier studies and what we've been doing on phase 3 in the u.k. we have a benign side effect profile. we have the antigen, the protein we just put in. we just finished a phase 3 pivotal trial with influenza earlier this year with a very benign trial. early studies with the covid vexing are the same. about the newed strain, if you had to go back and tweak things for the new strain, how quickly can you do that with a trad

there's two key issues when it comes to the novavax product here. they've got -- they're sort of producing those, those vaccines are producing the ain't general within the human body creating a mechanism of defense to, you know, get the virus. but when it comes to novavax one, you're manufacturing your own antigens. so it doesn't necessarily leave the patient, the person taking it, susceptible to becoming ill or possibly more side effects. and while the other two have to be frozen in those special freezers which makes this many harder to distribute, yours only has to be refrigerated. >> that's true, those are both -- well, the second one probably is the most important right now, because pfizer and moderna have done a great job with bringing their vaccines into the clinic and into the market. it's very protective. they do have different side effect profiles than ours. ours has been very debenign in the phase one and phase two trials, so we're happy with that. but importantly, ours is also a very stable protein that's using a manufacturing platform th

gottlieb, i was wondering if you could comment on novavax. novavax became the 5th vaccine maker to enter final stage testing in the united states yesterday. it seems to be the vaccine at least has a different mechanism than the pfizer moderna, as well as the astrazeneca vaccines. could you comment on what you think this vaccine will yield in terms of efficacy? >> well, the early data on this vaccine looked very encouraging. it generated a very robust antibody response. there's a presumption that this is going to be a protective vaccine. it's a different mechanism it's a protein vaccine in the case of moderna and pfizer, you're getting a genetic sequence of rna, the code is the production of the spike protein, the part of the coronavirus that we want to put in our bodies so we generate antibodies against it it's a big protein on the surface of the virus if we can generate antibodies, those are going to be protective what the novavax vaccine does is instead of giving a genetic sequence that codes, they're giving a piece of the spike protein its

how do you replicate by the massive amounts that are really needed right now and i'm glad to hear novavaxcalling on you guys at least. >> well they actually are here to call on us because our technology has demonstrated hyper-productivity versus the sell line so really the efficiency is in the center of the universe making a vaccine and/or an antibody because we also have a shortage of antibod ies coming as well and so what happens is you take a gene sequence that encodes for or describes the way that the cell will make the protein or the antigen in the case of a vaccine, or the monoclonal antibody or the antibody cocktail and so we've developed over the years the serendipity, synthetic biology a cell line that produces massive amounts of proteins and we don't have issues with the raw materials that go into producing these and these are made in standard microbial fermenters and this could be tech transferred very rapidly and very easily all over the world. >> liz: the obvious question, mark, is why isn't pfizer? why isn't mederna calling you guys or astrazeneca, maybe they are, i'd be on

the second important point is the novavax vaccine that has started phase three trials.e already have 1000 subjects recruited. [no audio] -- already activated in recruiting. the trial is being conducted currently in the u.s. and in mexico, and potentially brazil if we are to bring these countries into the trial fast enough. it is very important that we recruit subjects here in the u.s. and also outside of the u.s. because we project that there will be some challenges having subjects, particularly the elderly, health-care workers and people with comorbidities, participating in the trials. they have some vaccines available for you and immunization en masse. the third point. novavax is the first protein vaccine out of the six vaccines progressing into phase three trials. about nine months after starting this endeavor. eight months. the next program is the j&j vaccine. phase three trial recruitment has been completed, and we are very diligently working with the company and with the regulators. we feel more and more confident that readout of efficacy will take place during th

j&j we have high hopes for and i think the novavax program is really important. the main driver is that the u.s. has more eggs in the basket than europe. alix: how is production? rasmus: production so far looks ok. we have seen downgrades earlier in the year. it is still early to say. production numbers look very ambitious. there are a lot of resources going into it, there is support from government, from suppliers. i am hopeful that pfizer and moderna will meet their targets. we will not fully know. when we look at pfizer's numbers, they seem to be able to produce whereas moderna has supply left for 2021. it is also to take into account what is happening with those doses that are available for next year, which countries are they going to. to get asey're trying many vaccines as possible. alix: something you said about the new strain, in countries with lockout, we are still seeing a high rate. --you know why that is yet do we know why that is yet? rasmus: we can see that the numbers start going up and we try to predict the impact of .arious policy measures it just
