the nra is worried about being primaried. worried about nuttier smaller organization that are going to challenge its power and dominance. so much of this is a bureaucratic story about perpetuating your power, your position in washington. i think there was also a somewhat helpful message in roberted, too, despite background checks nra won, but you saw the supporters of some rational policy on this being more effective than they have been, coming very close to winning, being more organized, taking cues from the nra to win a fight. >> i want to talk to you. at the end of your piece, you talk about the sort of gun culture and being able to speak to the nra from a position not of antagonism but understanding. certainly having emissaries like joe manchin help. do you think those in favor are learning from how to interface with the gun rights movement? >> that's certainly what gabby giffords and her husband are trying to do with their groups. joe manchin and other legislators are looking to do the same. we'll see, by the way, to jac

the nra spent that money pretty well.ered in expansive conceal and carry laws, tied up federal regulation, and effectively blocked the renewal of the 1994 ban on assault weapons with high capacity magazines. in spite of numerous polls that show most nra members support tighter restrictions on gun ownership, the nra has strong armed legislation. the nra is really good at defending the second amendment, and some of its members are persuaded by all the talk about home invasions, chinese hackers and a post apocalyptic america. but the main thing they're defending is the bottom line for gun makers. but if the nra doesn't speak for gun owners, who does? i figured i'd just let them speak for themselves. >> so we are at the nation's gun show, which is the largest gun show in the state of virginia. >> we have some nice toys back here. >> i saw that. >> you can see everything here from handguns to rifles to shotguns to, you know, ar-15s and semiautomatic rifles. >> yeah, check that out. a grenade launcher. not for sale. >> there's

the nra is essentially saying they're against screening.ey're okay with allowing people to carry guns even in places where society has decided that we don't want guns such as on airplanes. you know, it's going to -- >> why would you screen if you don't want to screen for metal? why do we even bother having tsa taking our shoes off, taking our hats off, all that process if you can just scoot through there with a gun that's just as good as a metal gun? >> no. that's right. and so you either support screening for weapons to make a plane safe or you don't. there's really no point in screening for some guns but not other guns. it's only a matter time until somebody who wants to bring a plastic gun will do so. >> i'm sure the terrorists are watching right now. let's look at the nra statement that makes one thing clear. there's no such thing as common sense or compromise particularly on gun control. quote, we would like to make our position clear. the nra strongly opposes any expansion of the undetectable firearms act. apparently chuck schumer is

the nra is the default organization for people who are recreational hunters.he nra because he likes to go on gun range and shoot guns responsibly. and there is no place for him to go. he's resigned now. but there is no place to go to be someone who wants to contribute to gun safety and to be a part of a membership of gun owners who are fans of safe and common sense gun laws. >> just as quickly, does anybody think this congress will end january of 2015, does anybody think that there will be background checks, any kind of meaningful gun legislation between now and then? >> it will take a miracle. >> no way. >> not before -- >> or something more -- a tragedy, or a miracle or sadly to say this, a tragedy. >> one tragedy after another, we can go back to columbine in the 1990s -- >> we have to keep building towards it. between now and 2016, i think we're on a different trajectory. but i think trying to do this, a, before 2014, when we already know midterm elections, i'm going to go back to lower turnout, it is the most difficult terrain. you need elections that brin

the nra says thisaéÑ restrictio violates gun owners' second amendment rights.nra filed a similar lawsuit against the city of san francisco last month. >>> it was a gruesome car crash in the streets of san francisco that killed a 16-year-old high school student. and now nearly three months later, the district attorney has ttáy 58-year-old jenny zhu will be charged with felony vehicular manslaughter and two counts of witnesses told police they saw her mercedes suv speeding at up to 80 miles per hour before it slammed into a minivan and catering truck at pine and goff in september. a 16-year-old was killed. his mother and sister critically injured. d.a. george gascon says if convicted she could face up to seven years in prison. >>> the search is on for the bad beard bandit, what the fbi is calling a man suspected of terrorizing banks in northern california including the bay area. federal agents say he's robbed five banks spanning from sunnyvale to ripa in the last eight weeks and each time is wearing a fake beard like in these surveillance video pictures. the feds

the nra's personnel will regularly carry out inspections. the strictest rules apply to two processing plants and seven fuel fabrication facilities. operators must take measures equivalent to nuclear power plants to prevent serious accidents, such as hydrogen explosions and nuclear chain reaction. they need to have emergency measures in place in case of huge earthquakes and tsunamis. anticipating the new measures, the operator of one processing plant has already installed some equipment such as this fire truck. it can douse storage pools for spent fuel to prevent the fuel from melting in the case of a power loss. they also installed this air compressor to help prevent hydrogen explosions by supplying air to lower the content pressure in the plant in the case of a power outage. but even with these new standards, some local officials and residents live near these facilities express anxiety. one city is in the vicinity of the reprocessing plant. currently, the city has an evacuation plan for residents who live within a five-kilometer radius, but

as the head of the nra herman cain struck a deal with congress saying that the nra would not be opposedoverall minimum wage as long as the minimum wage for tipped workers stayed frozen forever. so it has been stuck at the federal level at $2.13 an hour for the last 22 years. it's a little bit better here in maryland at $3.63 but it is nothing to live on anywhere and it is because of the power of this industry that is essentially striking a deal that says we should not have to pay our workers wages. you, customers you should pay our workers wages for us. something i didn't know. i was talking about health and safety in restaurants. i grew up in l.a. and in l.a. they put letter grades in restaurant windows to tell you about the sanitation of the restaurant. i thought i knew something about sanitation. i had no idea that 90% of restaurant workers in america don't have paid sick days which means two-thirds report cooking, preparing and serving our meals when they are sick with true stories from my book h1n1 better known as swine flu or pink eye or hepatitis a. or typhoid fever all true stor

if they out spent us 10-1, but the race in virginia we spent about the same amount of money as the nra did. and you saw the results there. but we don't have to compete i think one to one with any organization. i think all we need to do is bring some balance to the equation because for so long there was really just the gun lobby who was communicating with the con -- constituents of the members of congress and that's not the case anymore. with a little balance we are going to get members of congress to think about their next election and then we will see more change. >> you say you had success passing laws in colorado and that is only part of the story. after the tougher gun legislation was passed there was a recall election and two top state senate democrats were recalled and forced out of office. >> well, john morris before said you could see it in the state senate. they had a tough district as well. so they knew going in that this could affect their outcome. i truly believe a recall should not be used for somebody not doing their job. that's a mistake. but it did happen. the reality t

i think they have now found one, and san francisco, the nra did the same thing. they found a retired police officer from the sfpd to file its lawsuit. that's really the tack they're taking attacking the law. >> sunnyvale is a small city. do they have money to defend itself in a suit like this? >> that's a good question, it doe does, it really adds up. a law firm has come up to give them pro bono defense, so it's not coming out of a fund. >> we also have a fuel pool coming out? what is that? >> 35 to 40%, californians say unions do more harm than good in california. that's bad news for organized labor, partly due to, i think, the bart strike has had a real negative impact in the bay area. in fact, a majority of people in the bay area think that transit strikes should be banned altogether. these are just a snapshot in time. it could change, but with issues like pension reform possibly coming up on the ballot next year, this is certainly something that labor unions and democrats as well as republicans are going to be keeping a close eye on. >> it's certainly a tough
