a poll around the same time last year showed it stronger viewing the nra -- the views of the nra that are unfavorable rose by 7%. close to flipping popular sentiment about the group. >> here's the thing. the nra might not care. they've got their base. they go out and vote. they've got their money. they've got a mission. and despite the declining support, the nra is signaling absolutely no change in its support for political campaigns. a watchdog group tallies how much support members of congress get from the nra. and their data shows the gun group has spent more than $7.7 million alone just that much money on senator john mccain of arizona throughout his career. that's more than any other legislator. it includes campaign funding and ads attacking opponents. the next closest politicians are north carolina senator at shy of $7 million and roy blunt at $4.5 million. north carolina's other senator, thom tillis with $4.4 million. and vo vo's cory gardener with 3.8 million. and marco rubio benefitting from just over 3 million in nra spending. something he's taken a lot of criticism directly

>> the nra crowd does not like that, i don't like it, i own five guns, i am a member of the nra, i have a conceal carry permit. raising the age doesn't solve the types of murders. you think about the young person going off to college, young woman, young man, they want to feel safe, secure, they're a responsible citizen. they can vote. i don't think they should have to raise the age, i don't think that will solve the problem. you got to deal with the mental health aspect of it. that's going to happen in local communities, places like florida, they raise the age. >> heard president trump touting the jobs report, 164,000 jobs. reflects a tight, healthy economy, would you agree? >> i was a little less disappointed when i saw that beyond the headline number you had upward revisions from previous reports, so basically, we were at the expectation of 195,000, 200,000 jobs, if you add in the upward revisions. it is a little puzzle why wages aren't rising faster, given that tight labor market you are talking about. i think we're going to see the labor force participation rise in the month ahead.

that is why so many nra members are alienated. in the past 12 -- to nra members, someone came up to me and said, "i was meant, i am a lot -- congressman, i'm a lifetime nra member for some you are doing the right thing. we need to take common sense action." he is right, and he is not unusual. we need to work together -- all of us, right, left from nra members or not -- stand together'to keep our communities safe. what happens at the nra convention is not the judge. it should not be determinative. communities,in a the expression that these student survivors have provided, that is what is going to guide us in the weeks and months ahead through the election and into real change in our gun laws. david: congressman, we have an election coming up in november. you have any reason to believe that the gun control issue will be material in any of the districts across the country? , i do, here isah why -- there are high-schoolkids will be voting for the first time in cities around the country who have never been political, for whom this has

and when the nra -- when that happened, the nra got smart. they started to build up their grassroots division, they started to build out their membership so that today they have nearly five million members. whereas during that same time period from the 1990s until the sandy hook school shooting, that massacre that killed 26 students and educators, the largest gun control group at that time was brady campaign. how many members, how many supporters do you think brady campaign has? at their peak they had about 500,000. so for a generation, the gun control movement was a tenth the size of the nra in terms of the grassroots action on the ground. now, that might come as a surprise because when you look at the media, the work that you do, there's so much focus on gun safety and gun control when, in fact, when you do the research and you dig beneath the surface it was a very grossly imbalanced match-up. now, that's because the change after the sandy hook shooting, every town for gun safety came on the scene. shannon watts, a mom out of indiana, she h

annual meeting where you hear from tens of thousands of gun owners and nra members who just kind off criticism the nra has received in the wake of mass shooting across the country, a very defiant tone and people talking about how they do not believe that the nra is responsible in any way for these mass shooting and then outside today here in downtown dallas, there have been a number of protests, people coming out here in the streets to protest the nra. we caught up with one of those demonstrators today. might be a familiar face to many people around the country now, fr fred, whose daughter was killed in the parkland shooting back in february. he spoke to a crowd here in downtown dallas and this is what he told us afterwards about what his message is for the nra today. >> they need to hear that their words, their attempts to push an agenda are safrpimply not going be accepted. they need to know that we have a message. they need to know we are here and we are not going away. and they need to know that we think they're not telling the truth. they need to know that when they say they're
