i want to be with kelly o'donnell. what's the message the rnc and trump campaign are hoping to deliver on this first day. >> it's to reenforce safety and security. something that donald trump will be a big part of his campaign going forward in a way he can distinguish himself. to give us a sense of where we are right now, the plaque card for ohio, the host state happens to be my home state as well. now typically that is an honor that would allow a delegation to have prime seating. instead they are the formalities of the convention of the cheap seats. why is that? let me give you a sense of the setting. typically the host state would have really prime real estate. instead ohio is over here kind of squeezed in the corner. it's the undercurrent that has been happening across the season. ohio was won by governor john kasich. we have heard a lot about john kasich not attending this convention. he's embarrassing himself and his state for not playing a more central role as the host governor. that tension is real. it is one of

katy mentioned kelly o'donnell's reporting. let's get to kelly o'donnell.en working the phone some more. you have some interesting nuggets about how this all went down. >> i have been talking to sou e sources and this is what has unfolded. we saw the public side of donald trump last night after he was calling in to fox news, talking about his three remaining picks, describing them all as fantastic and saying he had not made a, quote, final decision. at the same time, because of the events in france, the event to announce a running mate was delayed. sources are saying while trump was in california, which is where he was when he made those calls, separated from family, separated from the campaign, out there to do some fundraising, that he was calling people who he considers to be in his circle, people whose influence and respect e he admires to see is there any way out of this. this because donald trump was frustrated and irritated, i'm told, that there had been leaks. the story about mike pence being the pick had gotten out of his control. that events began

>> our own kelly o'donnell is speaking with him on capitol hill. i'm sure he's flushing out why he did not believe he would be right for this job. e we did see him yesterday in raleigh, north carolina. i'm told that he didn't necessarily want to speak at that rally, but donald trump called him out on stage. he came out and gave what was a quiet appeal for donald trump talking about what the man is like behind the scenes. this was a very rowdy crowd and didn't necessarily go over that well. you can even see donald trump patting senator corker's back when the crowd didn't seem to necessarily be taking to him like they take to donald trump. personalities were just very different. corker is extraordinarily quiet. a much more level headed demeern. donald trump is bigger than life. you can see the two person personalities clashing on stage last night. so i think what happened yesterday from the appearance of it all is they did not seem to match. we're get iting word that potentially joni ernst could be taking her name out of the running as well. she was
