so what o'rourke said wasn't that out of the norm.nd if you look at what democrats said, 74% of democrats are in favor of a buyback process and 49% of independents. we look at assault weapons. you know, it's only been 15 years that americans have been able to purchase assault weapons since the 2004 ban ended. and assault weapons are only 3% of all rifles that americans own. what he's saying it's not that radical or that crazy, and it was going to rile up the democratic base. you hear the crowd erupting when he said this. of course, the republicans are going to play this over and over again. and they're going to try to rile up their base. but what o'rourke has been saying there are more americans than not that are actually in favor of gun control. and that the u.s. congressmen need to stop being afraid of the nra. so, in this regard, i would disagree with what chris coons is saying. i think think what o'rourke is saying is getting the base energized. >> it is interesting to your point, natasha, there are those loud voices on the right.

that is not beto o'rourke's concern here.nd his whole sort of rational and reason for being in this contest still in the aftermath of that shooting in el paso and so this is grounded him to this. but i think there is a larger point about the gun debate. it is not that long ago that democrats would run away from this entirely. they would be so concerned that mentioning any -- any gun control measure would somehow turn off so much of the electorate. that has changed. the calculus on the issues have changed. it may not be what beto o'rourke is proposing, but it is still astonishing to see how far this debate has moved for democrats to feel comfortable talking about thir about. >> and it has moved because the polling was there except not for that. the polling is not there for a mandatory buyback. a majority of americans don't support that. but they support assault weapons ban and universal background checks so he's going farther than where the overall electorate is but he's doing it to make a point that obviously this is what he'

>> beto o'rourke. i have to say when every candidate started to talk about it, they acknowledged about whether they were talking about race or gun reform. they acknowledged his leadership in el paso. and when he -- and he took it humbly. i think he was surprised by the warmth that he was received specifically on that. and it is an acknowledgment, he was the first one to call it what it was. and it wasn't on the debate stage, but it was months ago. and it was a welcome, because you can't treat the source of the cancer if you can't say it out loud. and he did that. but overall, the whole audience was very attuned to what people were saying. they were very conscious. i was impressed by amy klobuchar, how she was able to unpack her own criminal justice efforts and what she has done and the accomplishments. and i can tell the crowd was also quite interested in it. i think overall most of the candidates did quite well. but beto o'rourke, because of his experience, because it was something that was so visible

how effective is this counter messaging tool, o'rourke's message going to be?think it is likely to be pretty effective. the trump campaign strategy is to portray democrats as extremists, even before they have a candidate, to define the candidate before they're nominated and to say these are socialists, they're coming for your guns. and that used to be more extreme than where democrats were, but i think you're right, thathe played into their hands, likely to be played in a republican ad, regardless of who the candidate is in midterm campaigns and in the presidential campaign ahead of 2020. >> flip side to that, though, is that people know this hit really close to home for o'rourke, happening there in el paso. you saw his visceral response on the campaign trail, what was happening. and now he has t-shirts that are already selling with, there it is, with this quote from that debate stage. do you feel like people will look at o'rourke and his moment on the debate stage and say wait a minute, i can identify with that, i, too, am frightened about when the next mass s

is o'rourke just saying the quiet part out loud?eah, i think he's saying it in a more aggressive way. but you're right. they have all come around and come out to that position in their platforms. but it is different, and i think we're going to see this on a lot of issues than what you hear in congress, where the democratic caucus is made up not only of progressives but also of a small but important group of centrists who really don't want to go there on this issue. if you look at the polling, you know, a majority of americans do support an assault weapons ban, but a much greater majority supports some of these other measures that democrats have coalesced around in congress. and that's the reason that you're not seeing them push an assault weapons ban as part of this legislative debate that's going on right now with talks with the white house and on the hill about where they can come together on some gun compromises. so i think there is going to be a continued disconnect between what we hear from democrats in congress on this issue a
