at oakland zoo today they tried out a brand-new experiment introducing the oakland fire department to the elements. these african elephants have acclimated to the usually mild temperatures in the bay area. so when it gets hot, the oakland zoo brought out the hoses. >> we had the idea of trying to bring out the oakland fire department and see what happens if we spray, you know, a big fire hose out into the exhibit and do the elephants enjoy that rain in july. >> reporter: like it? they loved it. 125 gallons of water a minute of relief from the heat. a matter of life and death at lindsey wildlife rehabilitation hospital. on a normal day, they've seen 30 days and animals. on a hot day that number can double. this one week old barn owl is struggling to survive. experts here say it was stressed out by the heat in its nest. to cool off it bailed out too early. birds especially fled their nests far too soon to survive when it's hot, making them especially vulnerable to predators. the heat wave sent many baby birds into this hospital. they desperately look for water in dangerous places like b

in the oakland hills. we've been on this scene for the lathours now. this is burning along grizzly peak boulevard, potentially above the cale c campus. it's burn 20 acres and prompted ightntarily evacuations at cal and surrounding buildings in the hills. let's bring in jodi hernandez who has been alongside the een fighters for several hours now and joins us with the latest, jodi? >> reporter: raj, things are looking a whole lot better at this hour. in fact, some of the berkeley fire crews out here at 5:00 have been released from the scene but it has been a very scary afternoon for folks that live up here in the hills. this was the scene when we arrived at grizzly peak road about 2:30 this afternoon. flames up the hillside. the fire jumped the road then continued its run uphill as firefighters tried desperately to contain it. >> the spread of the fire has been mostly stopped. the big problem that we're having now is just containing the fire on the bill behind us, which is grizzly peak. it's very difficult.

(mark) oakland police have identified the man who was shot wednesday morning in oakland...olice say the shooting happened near west oakland middle school. the shooter is still on the loose. (mark) the first responders who rushed in when a gunman opened fire inside a san francisco u-p-s building were honored by the mayor for their heroism. four u-p-s workers will killed on june 14th, including the gunman who shot himself. 17 men and women were given commendations and heart shaped pins emblazoned with the city's seal. people from multiple agencies, including police, firefighters, dispatchers and members of c-h-p were all honored. a firefighter spoke to kron four, saying he was just doing his job.
