people are set to gather at oakland city hall 230 in the afternoon. ll come before a vote by the city council. council members are expected to vote on a resolution confirming its efforts to build a new ballpark at howard terminal. meanwhile, in nevada, a setback for opponents of the proposed ballpark in las vegas for the a's. a judge ruled that a petition to put a funding proposal on next year's ballot is confused and incomplete. the teachers union that opposes the ballpark has been ordered now to revise the wording on that petition, which may delay its efforts in gathering the signatures needed for a ballot referendum. a group of bay area mayors and educational nonprofits has launched a new effort to try to address poverty by supporting underage presented youth from preschool through college. last week, they gathered at chabot college at hayward for an event called the mayor's circle. and earlier today on the floor, we spoke with hayward mayor mark salinas about this new effort. if we start with early childhood education and if we support our students

oakland police say one of its officers was targeted steps away from city hall and he defended himself just after 4:00 this morning. opd says one of its sergeants was parking for work when an armed man approached his car. the police officers association says the man opened fire on the officer as soon as he got out of his car and the sergeant fired back. >> pulls up in his car and this criminal came out and obviously decided to take him on, whether he knew or didn't know that the individual was a police officer, i have no idea, but ultimately, clearly, he picked the wrong victim today. >> and police say they were first alerted to the shooting by shotspotter technology. the suspect did die at the scene. investigators say the sergeant who shot him was not hurt and is now on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol. officers say they recovered a gun, multiple shell casings of different calibers. the police review agency is investigating. >>> meanwhile, a crazy scene in oakland. a woman has been hospitalized after a car slammed into a home. this happened on worth street near 88
