sure seems like the hits keep coming against the oakland police department. this time from the city auditor's department that's releasing a report today. basically saying that the department spent about $2 million on equipment that it either didn't use or wasn't used enough. starting with the shot spotter technology system. basically what that is, is a system of microphones set up all around oakland that can pick up the sound of gunfire and help police get to the scene quickly. report found there were staffing issues and police only had one computer for it that wasn't always monitored. the report covers from 2005 to 2011. while police spent a million dollars on a video system for the patrol cars here that could record interactions with residents it didn't even work and the vendor went out of business but that system was tweaked into lapel cameras for officers. three vendors in all actually went out of business with no opportunity for refunds. the report criticizes the i.t. department. the city auditor recommended about 22 ways that the oakland police departmen

oakland police for spending millions of dollars on technology it never used. today christie smith has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. more criticism coming down on the oakland police department at this time that even with the severe budget problem the department went on ahead and bought equipment that it didn't use or that was underused. that according to a new report that was just released by the city auditors office, including the shot spotter gunshot detection system, a series of microphones around the city that can pick up sound and determine where it's coming from. in that case the lack of use was because of staffing shortages and also apparently officers received some really inconsistent alerts about what was going on. the report covers a period from 2006 to 2011 and indicated that 1.87 million was spent on things that were not used enough. another system the cameras used in oakland police cruisers didn't work as initially planned. the cameras among other things were brought to bring oakland in line with a federal judge's order stemming from a civil rights lawsuit from human rights abuses. another system used to help identify at risk behavior wasn't used because that v
