obamacare is dead. the system is collapsing around us. there's the old saying that it's hard to turn a big ship at sea, but it's actually hard to turn a sinking ship, tucker, and that's what obamacare is. the reality is members of congress have been workingt' carefully, we've been very carefully compromising for the majorities in the house, and now in the senate to move the debate forward. it's all about making sure that as we transition back to free market, to a system of state-based innovation and reform, it would make sure it happens in an orderly way as the president committed during the campaign, and americans relying on health insurance today can know that there is going to be a system in place, the ability through tax credits and other opportunities for them to have even more affordable health insurance that they can choose. >> tucker: mr. vice president, thank you for that. >> vicehe president pence: good to be with you, tucker.

obamacare went into effect. less than four years ago. and in many states it's more than tripled. when obamacare passed, we were actually promised that families would save up to $2,500 in premiums every year, but the average obamacare plan today costs nearly $3,000 more than a plan did in 2013. but i don't have to tell small business owners about the struggle and the crisis in health insurance costs in america today. you all know also that while premiums are soaring, choices are plummeting. next year about 40% of america's counties, including nine whole states, will have only one choice of health insurance provider. which means they have no choice at all. even worse, dozens of counties will have no health insurance providers whatsoever. on the obamacare exchange in 2018. it's important to remember that while we think of these statistics and we reflect on them as policymakers, we're talking about real people facing a real crisis. you all know each and every day that behind every one of these numbers is a name. behind every name is a story. as i've traveled across the country on our president's behalf, i've heard firsthand from job creators and working families about the burden that obamacare has placed. the burden o

that took about eight months to go from start to finish. >> when obamacare became obamacare. >> when obamacare became obamacare. this was jammed through. this wasn't a bipartisan process. and if you think about it right now, that's what we need to do and dial back. here's the consequence, though. there's a consequence on the budget. there's a consequence on tax reform. so if you want to talk about -- >> on getting this thing through with bipartisan support. >> you know why they're so nervous right now? it's not just we owe this to our constituency, but remember, when the cbo just did the estimate on the senate bill, it was $320 billion accretive to the deficit. well now, what is the deficit implication of not doing health care and what does that mean for the future of tax reform? that means all of these things get delayed, so if you're just looking from an economist's perspective, this is a real danger to the economy and the long-term, we're growing in a slow rate, stock market has been terrific, but now, we've got some real risk here that if we can't get this done, can we get tax reform done,

obamacare? often working-class people. in my state there are 25,000 people that pay a fine because they can't afford obamacare. these 25,000 people make less than $25,000 a year. they are our working class and obamacare punishes them and says, you have to pay a fine. and they say, well, i wish i had insurance, but obamacare added all of that he's mandates, things that i can't afford. sure, everybody wants to have everything under the sun covered by their insurance but when you mandate that, you elevate the price of insurance. so what has happened? young, healthy people have lost their insurance and don't buy insurance in droves. obamacare says you can come back any time after you're sick and buy your insurance. now, that sounds good, but what it leads to is the death spiral of obamacare. obamacare premiums have doubled because the young, healthy people are saying it costs too much and the sicker and sicker people are the only ones left in insurance. this is what happens when you let the government get involved in the marketplace. if you allow the marketplace to work, what is the one universal feature of capitalism? you get the lowest amount of cost and the most amount of goods distributed to the most

obamacare rate shock. another obamacare rate shock. it's happening in tennessee. earlier this year aetna and humana both said they were dropping out of the obamacare exchanges. dropping out completely. significant in -- cigna, one of the last big companies willing to sell these plans, they said they're going to have to raise premiums by 42% next year. in georgia, across the border from tennessee, blue cross blue shield is asking for an average rate hike of 41% in georgia. the atlanta journal constitution newspaper had an article about it just this last week. this is what they said: the newspaper, the atlanta journal constitution, says blue cross might charge as much as 75% more for one plan next year. 75% more for one plan. that's obamacare. now remember, president obama saying if you like your plan, you can keep your plan. those plans are gone. remember president obama said rates would drop by $2,500 a year for people. that's not what we saw. what we saw is what we're seeing continue today, "atlanta journal constitution" blue cross blue shield may charge as much as 75% increase next year. another one quoted assaying simply yikes. that's what people are facin
