this time it happened in the odessa, midland area of west texas.till remain after a dramatic series of events starting at just after 3:00 p.m. local time this afternoon that left at least five victims dead as well as the shooter. 21 people are hurt including police officers and a child under 2 years old. the authorities are still piecing together what happened. this is what we know so far. the rampage began shortly before 3:30 p.m. local time when a trooper tried to stop a gold honda. once the car was pulled over, the driver opened fire. he then took off, heading into odessa, on the way shooting a second person. as he drove, he gunned down more victims. at one point the shooter ditches his car and steals a u.s. postal service mail truck. then the shooter heads toward a movie theater, which is then where law enforcement catches up. there's a shootout and the gunman dies, bringing an end to the rampage. but of course not the terror being felt today by the community. >> are there any current active shooters going on at this time? >> we have -- we've h

the democratic leader mentioned odessa. well, it is true that the shooter in odessa did have a mental health commitment and he tried to get-- by a gun through traditional means and he failed a background check so he wasn't successful. and while the details are still being investigated, it looks like he purchased a firearm from an unlicensed firearms dealer, which is a crime. and if the dealer sold the firearm to the shooter knowing that he was disqualified from purchasing or buying a firearm, that would be another crime. so, trying to suggest that some sort of additional background check would have solved that problem, when what the dealer did, and what the purchaser did were already illegal, i just don't think holds up. so i look forward to continued discussion and debate on this topic. it's on the mind of an awful lot of people, as i traveled across my state, the state of texas this last -- this august as we all did during the august work period. but i always benefit from going back home and getting refreshed by the thoug

midlands and odessa, separated by 20 miles.efore the car came to a complete stop, the gunman was firing at them. in a couple of parts of deca, it is surreal to see the number of scattered crime scene areas that are roped off and taped off. police look for bullet fragments in parking lots in streets. that's not something we've seen before in a mass shooting of this magnitude. this is a shooting spree for some time, that had law enforcement officers urging people across the city to take shelter, to get off the streets immediately and not be outside. those warnings created fear in the city. they tried to track down the suspect, which they did in odessa, in the back of that movie theater parking lot. the suspect took over a u.s. mail postal truck. one woman talked about what it was like to come face-to-face with the gunman. >> we heard a pop, pop, pop. it was loud. you could feel the percussion. is that what it's called? and i said to dan, i'm like, is that did that car just backfire? >> you're okay. >> i looked over my shoulder. t

what more have we heard from police about this since that end in odessa. well foley police said that this narrative that they've been able to string together in very short time may still change because so little time has passed since this violence and folded but the story that they just told reporters is that this one lone the suspect who as you said is a white man in his mid thirty's was pulled over by a traffic stop by a state trooper a police officer in texas for some reason this person opened fire on this police officer managed to drive away and then shot at other random people from his moving vehicle police say then this is suspect went on to abandon the car he was driving and steal a mail delivery truck and continue shooting at innocent people who are just out and about fellow motorists while getting away from police officers this continued until police caught up with this man outside of a movie theater in the nearby city of odessa and after exchanging gunfire then the suspect was killed it's still unclear whether he was shot by police or whether he

chuck, yesterday at least five killed, 21 injured in a shooting in odessa. how are the politicians responding there? >> well, what's been interesting today, i mean look, we're at 51 deaths in the month of august from mass shootings, so let that sink in a minute, and you know, after el paso and dayton, there was a round of hammering by politicians, and let's be honest, we all noticed a bit of a fade, if you will, of attention being paid to the gun regulation issue as august was getting closer to september, and we get this sobering reminder that the scourge of gun violence is something that congress still hasn't tackled and there's going to be an expectation that they try and do something. so you do hear rhetorically again, at least some thought that something may happen. i think it's a very narrow debate that you'll see happen in congress, but i think it's going to happen and the debate will be on some incremental changes to the background check system and the idea of a red flag law. i don't know if we'll get within anywhere outside of that, assault weapons b

the fbi has sent resources to midland/odessa, texas. a law enforcement official tells cnn, those resources, include forensic examiners. cnn contributor andrew mccabe has this to say. each time you have one of these incidents, you have an opportunity to mine it for all of the intelligence you can. and some of that is understanding what that person's progress for trajectory was leading up to the event. are there signs or signals that people exhibit as they are moving down this path toward radicalism or extremism. this will be one more doesn't to build out that entire timeline, that picture, that rich picture of this person's background and what they were saying, what they were writing, trying to act about this event. i think one of the things we've seen since the last two mass landings, is forward activity. you see people being arrested after exhibiting or violent materials. there's no question that law enforcement is taking those threats and that intelligence very seriously right now. there's no single thing we can do to guarantee that w

odessa police would only say that he is a white male in his 30s. authorities say he shot a texas state trooper as he was being pulled over for not using a turn signal, then he took off 20 miles west to odessa where the shooting continued. the suspect eventually stole a mail truck and rammed into cop cars before they killed him. 22 people were shot, 7 killed. three of the injured were from law enforcement. >> just want to give an update on our trooper that was shot yesterday. by the grace of god, he survived the shooting. he went through a couple of hours' surgery yesterday, and doctors left there very optimistic that he will have a recovery, a full recovery after, obviously, a road ahead of some rehabilitation. >> reporter: the day before this latest shooting, texas governor greg abbott held his e first domestic terrorism task force to address this particular kind of violence. he convened the task force after 22 people were killed at a walmart in el paso just last month. >> i'm heartbroken by e the crying of the people of the state of texas. i'm ti

our lead national correspondent david begnaud is in odessa.t's going on? >> reporter: good morning. the gunman, 36-year-old seth ator, used an ar style rifle. there is a report from the "houston chronicle" quoting a state representative here in desant odessa who says atore failed a background check. the police were saying initially there were two shooters. that's because he was using two different vehicles. the car he was stopped in and the car he stole. there were not two shooters. there is only one. police say this all started when state troopers pulled over atore for a simple traffic violation. failure to signal. he opened fire and sped off, shooting randomly at people. there are 15 different crime scenes across odessa and midland. a short time later atore ditched his vehicle. he hijacked a mail van, killing 29-year-old postal worker mary granados. her twin sister rosie was on the phone with her when she was shot. >> i think that he could have taken a car without having to kill her, you know. just he could have taken the car. that's it. tha
