we put the starlet on the buckeye state of ohio. staff registering as a lead political reporter for cleveland.com and joins us now for that conversation. what is the lay of the land, the status applet in the state of ohio today with just six days to go? >> guest: it's fasting here because if you look at the 2016 election, donaldf trump one ste by eight percentageig points, about 450,000 votes and all of the public polling and ten on the grand stuff that you see really does point to this being a close race. i don't know it's necessarily tilting one way or another but maybe a slightot tilt towards trump right now but it really is a massive shift in panoply of the land even from a year ago. from what we were expecting. using both candidates really investing kind of as of late in the state, the biden campaign, by being here twice over the past month and kamala harris also being here. the trump campaign is ramped up how much are coming to this date as well with vice president mike pence and trump's children of pictures and trump himself a

ohio is one of the fir states to shut down. shut down early. ohio was the first state to shut down schools, for instance. and so, all of these things have contributed to people deciding, i think this time, that they are going to cast a ballot, and we have eight million registered voters right now in ohio. at's the largest number we've had sie 2008. and it will be interesting to see what the percentage of that eight million that actually turns out to vote. >> sreenivasan: are there particular races that we should be paying attention to are there particular precincts or anything that we should be looking for on election night? >> well, in 2016, donald trump won ohio by eight points. since then, the republicans have had some losses. democrats have had some gains. we didn't have a blue wave in ohio in 2018. we had blue tornadoes, or blue storms, ki of. because the five executive offices-- governor, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer and attorney general-- went to republicans. but democrats were able to flip five seats in the ohio house in total,

speaking of the supreme court, didn't come up in the debate last night but the people of ohio deserveo know, after 150 years with nine judges on the supreme court of this country, leading democrats in washington are talking about packing the court, adding seats, to appoint activist, liberal judges to advance their agenda from the judiciary. joe biden said he would not answer the question, then he said he would answer it after judge barrett was confirmed, now he is saying he will answer after the election. ball and hes a live will tell the american people whether he is going to pack the court long after election day. come on man! the american people deserve a straight answer, joe! when you're running for the highest office in the land, you ought to be willing to tell the american people you are going to respect the highest court in the land. as is the covid rate in the state of ohio. s in the state of ohio. is it time for at least partial lockdowns in some of the counties because the governor said 83 of your 88 counties are now considered high incident areas? >> yeah. a couple ohio river counties aren't but most of the rest of the state is. that's up to the governor and what they decide. i think there should be a statewide mask mandate but that's not in the cards apparently. the governor tries to do that and some right-wing republicans filed articles of impeachment against him. i hope we go back right after the election with the election in the rear view mirror, as i hope it is, soon after the election and get serious about doing this. if not, when the democrats take over in january we will do a package for public education and for local governments and for small business and unemployed workers and prevent evictions. i'm hopeful that mcconnell will do something in november and december, and the president will settle down and play ball and get serious about negotiat

what is your sense of what is motivating ohio voters right now? >> a number of things. first, thanks for having me. people forget that ohio is not only a manufacturing state, but one of the largest agricultural states in the united states. >> that's right. >> when the president came here four years ago, he promised he would bring back manufacturing. manufacturing in how ohio now is at its lower than in a decade. we've had more bankruptcies than anyone can even remember how many times we've had this number of bankruptcies. he talked about what he was going to do about education. all of the things he said, none have come true. there were promises made, no promises kept. i think the people of ohio have realized this president is not acting in our best interest. when you lay on top of that covid and what it's done to this economy, people have said, you know what? we gave that a try appeared now we're going back to the tried-and-true. >> just in the last 24 hours, ohio has seen 1100 new cases, 20 new deaths. senator brown and i were just talking about the comments that presid

you're the governor of the state of ohio.s it bother you that the president and his team put your citizens at risk? >> well, i think it's important what the president has done. the president went to the hospital. that could not have been an easy thing for him to do. i'm sure he didn't want to go to the hospital but made the right decision. they have put up videos of people talking to the people of this country. i think that is very positive. look. i said this at a press conference i did the other day, this should be kind of an alert to everybody that anybody can get the virus, even president of the united states can get the virus. so we ought to use this and simply just, you know, learn from it and so people who maybe have not worn masks in the past, you know, i'm hoping that they will look at this and say president can get it, i can get it and it can happen to anybody. i hope that is what happens and that is what comes out of this. we pray for the president and we pray for the first lady and everybody else who has the virus.

is easy to vote in ohio. 93% responded to a recent poll that said it is easy to vote in the state of ohioain, in ohio absentee votes are routinely returned by mail. it is trustworthy, you can track the ballot going to the official secretary of state website and track your ballot to make sure it is received. in ohio, ballots can be received up to ten days after election day, as long as postmarked by monday, november 2nd. they know how to do this, noise and confusion created by last minute lawsuits is a disservice to voters. >> you say it is a disservice. in many other states, it is republicans pushing lawsuits. i will let the courts set it out, not take sides. let me ask another question about your experience there, in terms of the numbers of people. around the country we're seeing record shattering number is of people requesting absentee ballots or early voting. what is your sense of ohio in. >> same thing here. we have seen over 2 million absentee ballot requests already. blows away anything from the past in 2016 or 2012, it was fewer than a million. we're excited to see that. i mailed e
