typhoon goni will impact taiwan and okinawa. how bad do things look, jonathan? >> james, it looks pretty serious. we're talking about a very strong typhoon already making its impact and its ability and strength known in the northern philippines. we'll talk about that in just a bit. first let me show you the pictures of these two storms out there. goni near the philippines and atsani near the philippines islands. they are strong storms and continue to show their intensity. here is a look on friday, northern cost of luzon, clouds all around. let me point out, something we can look at satellite perspective on visible imagery. notice how hazy and how kind of milky this area looks rather than clear cloud tops toward the north. that means very strong winds taking place starting to really rip the clouds apart. so we have more of the milky type of perspective. now, as we look forward in time, yes, the northern coast of the philippines will continue to get impacted with not only strong winds but high waves and heavy rainfall progressing throughout the next 48 hours. this

there's a typhoon heading toward okinawa in southern japan. meteorologist robert speta has the details. >> this time it does look like we'll be seeing typhoon-strength winds by the end of this weekend. take a look at the satellite picture. you can see our storm system right now, it looks like it's heading over towards luzan, but good news for you, it's expected to make a right-hand turn, heading through the friday into saturday. unfortunately, it will be bringing heavy rainfall for those of you across eastern portions of taiwan. last week, we had soudelor come through, caused extensive flading and landslides before turning northeast and then just towards the west of okinawa by monday. so if you are across this area, you want to be making typhoon preparations at this time. meanwhile, we are looking at heavy rainfall. so across much of luzan, even though you're not seeing a direct impact, you're seeing showers, some areas as much as 2 to 300 millimeters of precipitation. in ish gaky and na ha, you see the showers push in, and by monday in na ha,

navy supply ship where it crash-landed off the coast of okinawa. 15 u.s. special operations forces and two japanese military were aboard. remarkably, only six were injured, no one was killed. the accident occurred during a special operations training exercise about 20 miles off okinawa. military officials say at some point the helicopter ran into trouble. the pilot either lost control or for some reason, perhaps mechanical, was forced to land on a very small, very tight portion of the deck. video shows the helicopter narrowly missed stacks of cargo containers on either side, striking them could have ripped through the fuselage, injuring or killing those aboard. the pilot also avoided ditching the chopper into the sea, which would have put those on board at greater risk. the military's launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. jim miklaszewski, nbc news, the pentagon. >>> for the first time the head of the epa surveyed the damage unwittingly done by her own agency a week ago when it triggered a massive river contamination in color
