olympic trials, any olympic trials. as you mentioned, it's the gymnastics and it kicks off tomorrow. hp pavilion is empty right now, but later on what's going to happen is more than two dozen gymnasts compete and fill up the floor here and train for the cameras because today it is media day ahead of the official start to the trials tomorrow. they're going to do interviews for the cameras. joining me this morning is jim sparako with hp pavilion. he let us in this morning. this is a first for san jose. how big of a deal is this? >> it's a very big deal. i think right now the country's starting it to get olympic fever, and this weekend the entire country is focused on san jose. this is the biggest event that's going on this weekend in terms of the olympics and preparation. so it's great for the city to have the focus of the country on san jose. so it's very exciting. >> reporter: media day, i mentioned what will happen. give us an overview. >> the gymnasts are all in town now and will be out here practicing and warming up

gymnastics olympic trials. among this the gymnasts vying for a spot on team usa are a few bay area athletes. nbc bay area's arturo santiago caught up with them as they prepare to make a lifelong dream a reality. >> this stanford student is doing what he does best. he's one of 15 men competing this weekend for a spot on the men's olympic gymnastic team. >> kind of a kroop shoot. statistically, they're only going to choose five people and then three alternates. >> reporter: the six-time all-american is still at stanford every day training, but he took all of last year off from school to devote entirely to his olympic dream. and he says he's ready. >> at this point, you know, there's not much more physical preparation you can do, so it's all mental. >> he has a mental toughness. he found a way to focus and succeed at gymnastics even while dealing with adversity at home. he lost his mother to cancer when he was only 15 years old. >> my sister and i have been through a lot, you know, and through lots of downs, and w
