this is a home on van castle in east orinda up in the hills.behind us, you can see part of the hillside behind the home broke apart basically. it almost looks like someone took a knife and cut into the side of the cake. all of this debris, mud, rocks slid on tuesday. this happened on tuesday. into the back of this house. but the concern though today is that -- you can see the rain is falling. more heavy rain expected. some of the city public works crews are a bit concerned this mudslide could get worse. here is a look at the damage up close. mud and debris crushing in the back wall and shattering windows. the public works inspector says this was a slow moving slide. it happened on tuesday. so the family was able to get out safely. no one was hurt. he estimates about 180,000 cubic feet of rocks and debris broke off and slid down the hill. >> it's amazing how much rock is in that hill and just how much -- how much mother nature and water can do to devastate a hillside. >> and speaking of all of that rain that we had on tuesday. this is video from

ktvu's rob roth is in orinda where a mudslide slammed into a home. >> let's start with tom vacar where authorities shut down highway 37. tom. >> reporter: the big difference this time is that the chp is out here. what they are doing is quite interesting. they are allowing traffic to go through, otherwise it's this trade of i go, you go, i go, gow. what the police officer is doing, he is waving this traffic through. this is the rush-hour traffic. what's happening is they are able to get back on highway 37 very quickly, and the cars that are coming off of highway 37 for the detour, because they cannot go any farther west, they're being made to wait for just a little bit, but then they go out in mass. what that does is it speeds up the entire process, and it is much, much less difficult for people to get through this than it has been the last two times this was closed for multiple days. having said that, the real concern is with the land, and that may be an oman of bad things to come. several homes below the hillside that destroyed one of them are in great peril tonight. relentless rain f

we can show you where it is from where we are in the orinda hills. it is on the north side of highway 24. you can see large swaths of dirt where part of the hill has broken away in the landslide. there are three transmission towers near the area. the one in the foreground, closest to us, if you look close, it looks like it is tilted. that's the one we're talking about here. here is an aerial view from sky fox. this is a transmission tower in a remote location not near any homes. because of the landslide, the area around it is unstable and pg&e is working to stabilize the area so the transmission tower is not threatened. they have been bringing poles to build a temporary backup to connect the wires to if it has to go out of service or be disconnected. there are two train trucks parked on highway 24 below, located in the eastbound direction. those crane trucks are there to catch overhead power lines in case they dip or fall. pg&e says the cranes are there out of an abundance of caution as they try to shore up the tower on the hill above. it is there ju

a chunk of the orinda hillside is slowly sliding down. >> juliette goodrich says a high-voltage pg&e tower is at serious risk of coming down. >>reporter: it's been raining all day even our lens on the cameras fogging up. we are at the base of this mudslide and further up is what pg&e crews are working to clear to keep it from going into this power. the biggest challenge is just getting up there. in the middle of today's downpour the race was on to show up -- are up -- it's threatening a transmission tower. >> i didn't expect it. >>reporter: neighbors could hear and see all of the heavy equipment stabilizing the soil underneath the tower. on a clear day you can see the erosion from these photos. the mud is up about three feet. >> there was. i was shocked. i didn't expect anything like this. >>reporter: getting to the mud slide has been challenging. the roads are too muddy and unstable to drive on. runways were brought in so crews could drive up to the hillside. >> the intense rain has been causing saturation of the soil. that's how this transpired. >>reporter: they are securing the hi

this is in a remote area of orinda where a hillside has caved in and a mudslide could overrun the tower. pg&e has been flying in equipment by helicopter in an effort to shore up the soil. as you can see they have been building a road to get to the area. crews will be working through the night. fortunately, the tower isn't threatening any structures. >> there are no customers in the actual area of the transmission tower. it's in a very remote area of orinda so there are no homes or businesses in that area. >> engineer been working on a plan to protect the tower since they discovered had mudslide a few weeks ago. >>> drivers are being encouraged to stay away from dolittle drive because of downed power lines. authorities closed a section of the road after a vehicle slammed into a power pole. crews were able to open a lane in each direction about 1:30 this afternoon. dolittle drive is one of the aternate routes to oakland international airport. >>> palomaris road is closed again. the mud and rocks are still coming down a canyon wall and giant boulders are blocking the road as well. it runs
