ossoff. let's talk about president trump and the russia investigation for a moment. for our audience, if you are watching or listening after thursday morning, we are speaking moments before james comey speaks to the senate intelligence committee. but we did at least see the opening statement in advance in which he said in a series of meetings, the president asked him to back off the investigation of former national security advisor michael flynn. and asked for what amounted to a loyalty pledge. secretary handel, starting with you, do you think the president obstructed justice? ms. handel: based on that testimony, i don't think we can know one way or the other. we don't know what former f.b.i. director comey is going to say. today in front of the committee. what i think is the responsible thing to do here is let the four investigations proceed. we have a special counsel, we have the senate, the house, as well as the justice department investigation. and it is imperative that we get to the fact

they're waiting to hear from jon ossoff. it was pretty clear from the beginning of the night when some of those early votes were coming in that the democrats close to the race were uncomfortable. republicans feeling very good. the one thing i will say, talking to republicans who even certainly were supportive of karen handel, they do warn, any look back, for instance, on 2009 and they say they were feeling really discouraged by having lost special elections. and then they got into 2010 where they actually won the house back. so they say this is a great night for them obviously, but they warn too much about extrapolating too much from the bigger picture especially when you have a race like this where tens of millions of dollars have come in and people on right argue that it changes the landscape of the race. but talking to democrats, they're saying this is a race where ossoff never should have had any business being competitive and they're hoping that will encourage democrats especially in races that could be more competitive

he was the jon ossoff of his day. electrified democrats, ran a great race in the seat vacated by rob portman that portman got 70% of the vote in 2004. he got within three. the republicans held him off and thought they had found the formula. in 2006, they lost the house and in 2010, the democrats held with mark critz in a special electioning in pennsylvania. the see the vacated by john murtha and thought they figured it out to hold the blue collar seats. when you got to the general in 2010, they got an ni layed. be cautious there. the other thing this does affect the future democratic debate is it's a reminder that the southern suburbs are different. this is a white collar well educated district and those are the kind of voters that generally donald trump is having trouble with. but you know what? in 2016, hillary clinton won only 28% of college educated whites in georgia, about half the level she did in new york and colorado. and california. this is a reminder that those voters are more conservative. what that means i

they've said ossoff, pelosi. we're going to see this play over and over between now and 2018 election day. it will be interesting to see how well that worked. >> the obvious indicator here is the dems wouldn't have dumped so much money into this if they didn't think they could win. i guess their read on that is the slim margin for trump over hillary clinton. it was a point and a half. i think romney won by something like 20-plus, price was a prohibitive favorite, tom price, who is now the health and human services secretary. he was holder of that seat and he was a prohibitive favorite, 60-plus-percent in every vote. what's their gamble here and what's the chance it pays off? >> the big gamble in this district is the education gap, the education divide. there are a lot of college-educated voters in this district, far more than in any of the other special elections we've seen so far this year. and that's the biggest source of hope. because these are the people, these are the romney voters that 19% or so that didn't

>> reporter: i saw a lot of energy on ossoff's side. i was with ossoff on monday night on his last election event. it was a big crowd. i saw his volunteers everywhere throughout the suburban district. but based on my reporting, brian, at the end of the day, republican voters came home even the suburbanites who are big fans of president trump. they're still support of gop agenda items like overalling the affordable care act, cutting taxes. that's why they came out for handel. >> we should mention, robert, they enforced some team discipline. they noted the number of republicans who sat out the primary in effect and they put out eight plea to get off the bench, get in the game, and come help. and it appears to have made the difference tonight. >> reporter: you know what else made the difference, brian? we got to pay attention to this. handle handel did not embrace president trump. everybody knows that. who did she go after? she targeted politically house minority leader nancy pelosi, so did a super pac aligned with house speaker paul ryan.

i think jon ossoff has done a great job in this campaign. this district just vetted for tom price by 60 to 40. he's in a neck and neck race with karen handel. this district just to be clear for viewers, there are 47 districts that are more democratic than this district in which we are again, neck and neck. there's only a 24-house seat majority. i'm proud of the race that jon ossoff has run. he's got a lot of enthusiasm. he is attracting republicans to vote for him. and democrats, liberal democrats as well as republicans. he's created a big coalition. >> what are you saying? >> and i would say that there are -- there are disgusting ads on the air and they're only one-sided. the attacks this manufactured ad with the president's voice, president obama's voice, the disgusting ad connected to last week's shooting, the statements people are making, those aren't happening in jon ossoff's campaign. he's running a positive campaign about the people in the district. >> listen, near ra, i'm not in georgia and don't know what ads are on the air. >> you

if ossoff wins, what are the ramifications for the republican party? >> huge and if he loses they're huge as well. tomorrow somebody will come on your show, a lead democrat or heed republican and say this race didn't matter. but the reality is this does matter and frankly democrats need to win this race because all of the energy of the last five months, this is exactly the race they should be able to win. donald trump only won it by 1 1/2 points. seeing a surge in early voting from no party affiliates, from women, from people over 50. this will be a tight race but if democrats don't win this race, they have to re-evaluate what their message is going into '18. >> if democrats do win, if i am a sitting republican congressman, senator, in a district similar to this, in a suburban area that could be democratic, what do i do? retire? >> you're terrified. there wouldn't be a lot of republicans but this could be the sign of a wave. the other thing both parties are doing right now is message testing. i was elected in a special election when obamacare was histo
