community health centers once again. but it did give tax breaks to big insurance companies. we cannot leave our community health centers without the funding they need to serve the people that we all work for. we should take action now to fully fund them because they can't wait any longer. i know that every one of my colleagues here in the senate has come face-to-face with the opioid epidemic. i know i have. i traveled my state and met with health care workers, local officials, people from law enforcement and the judiciary who are working on the front lines of this crisis. i know what it's like to have a loved one dependent upon narcotics. i met with families who have lost a loved one to this epidemic. i met with family members who are currently finding their own lives totally upended because of a loved one hooked on opioids. there is bipartisan support for doing more. there is support across party aisles for the federal government to step up and be a stronger partner in this fight. a short-term stopgap measure isn't going to do it, and we all know it. so let's find the will to work together to

we haven't funded our community health centers. i heard the senator from alaska talk yesterday about how critically important they are for alaska. whether it's critically important for montana. i have a notion they are critically important for every rural state in the union and probably every urban state, too, as far as that goes. that needs to be taken care of. in montana, where we have just over a million people, 100,000 people depend on community health centers for their health care. then there is a thing called 340-b, not to get in the weeds too far, but these are payments given to hospitals that hold pharmaceutical companies accountable and keep our hospitals open. i had hospital administrators and former hospital administrators in my office over the last month telling me if this doesn't get fixed, we're going to lose hospitals in montana. once again, taking away access from regular folks. that's not included in any of this and could have been done months ago. there have been plenty of folks come to the floor and talk about op

republican-controlled congress has also failed to renew other investments that our families rely on for the care they need. programs like community health centers which serve 25 million patients particularly in our rural and poor communities. the national health service corps which brings doctors and other health care providers to underserved areas through scholarships and loan repayment. and the national teaching health center graduate medical education program, which brings primary care and dental residencies to communities in need. leaving these programs without long-term extensions a minute longer is utterly irresponsible because this lack of certainty for them is bringing a negative impact on our communities. for example, the northeast washington health program serves some of the most rural areas in my state including ferry county, which has fewer than four people per square mile. they are struggling now to hire needed medical staff and managers because of this uncertainty that's now there. ferry county cannot wait. the community health association in spokane runs 12 health center sites and sees more than 70,000 patients a year. th

massachusetts has transformed how we treat some of our most medically vulnerable citizens, while also improving the health and wellness of our communities in fact, for many americans, community health centers are the only access point for affordable health care. in massachusetts, it treatments more than 750,000 patients, and 16% of these patients are uninsured and nearly half are on medicaid. in addition to the quality comprehensive care they provide, community health centers play a key economic role in many regions across the country. community health centers in massachusetts have created more than 12,000 jobs, including more than $8,500 direct full-time employees. much like chip, unfortunately, republicans have denied community health centers the certainty of funding they need, forcing them to make tough decisions that ultimately impact their ability to fulfill their mission and care for the people of their communities. i have heard from community health centers across the commonwealth that congress' inability to reauthorize funding has made new physicians reluctant to practice at their facilities, further straining an already depleti

by june michigan's community health centers will lose over $80 million in funding and over 99,000 patients will lose care. last month i had the opportunity to visit two of our great michigan community health centers. they're a network, each of them, operating more than one site. hamilton community health network in flint and western wayne family health centers in ingster. these centers are serving literally thousands of michigan families. people of michigan every day who don't have medical care for one reason or another. now those thousands of people are at risk of having no place to go if they get sick or if they need preventive care so they don't get sick. hamilton community health network will run out of funding in april. western wayne family health centers won't get their full funding this month. they were asking me should they be laying people off. how should they be planning for their centers? what should they be doing? that means 15,500 people are wondering what will happen to them if they or their children get sick or slip on the ice, which there is a lot of in michigan, mr. president. and sprain and ankle. felicia knows what it's like to live under
