over the years the city was disjointed privately owned companies. horses and steam and electric-powered vehicles. creating a hodgepodge of transit options. none of them particularly satisfying to city residents. the city transit system like the city itself would have changes during the san francisco earthquake. the transition that will pursue from this aftermath would change san francisco's transportation system once again. facilitated by city boss, abe ruth, ushering in the electric city car. the writing was on the wall. the clammer had begun for the experiment including public transit people. owned by the people and for the people. the idea of a consolidated city-owned transit system had begun traction. and in 1909, voters went to the polls and created a bond measure to create the people's railway. would become a reality three years later. on december 28, 1912, mayor sonny rolph introduced the new geary electric streetcar line and the new san francisco railway. that he said would be the nucleus that would host the city. and san francisco gave furth

but self-confident, ambitious, intellectual practitioners of the liberal arts, famous beyond their own citybrunelleschi visited rome after his unsuccessful submission for the baptistery doors competition. there he saw a great city in a state of decay. the sheer scale of the roman ruins and the building techniques he analyzed provided inspiration for the greatest problem of structural engineering in italy-- how to complete the cathedral being built in florence. in this great space, we are surrounded by a gothic architecture ripe for the renaissance-- the flat surfaces of the walls, the crisp planar detailing of the piers, with their sharp angles, not a rounded form in sight. it all looks so precise and so completely preplanned. yet if we had stood here half a century after they began to build this building, we would have seen something different. you would still have seen the medieval houses within the existing foundations. as the piers went up, they were still arguing about how high they should be. they had a competition about the capitals' form. they had plaster, wooden, stone models, and

and this is an ordinance and yet for every special event, you are breaking the law, the city is breaking its own laws, it is a city exempt from its own laws? >> they are breaking the law, time and time again, with the load limit law on the marina boulevard at area and the access and also, for the buses which bring people in and the last time when we had the golden gate bridge anniversary, i mean the city actually had muni bringing the buses up and down the streets which have an ordinance saying that you can't do that. and you know, i think that we need to respect our own laws. i think that the city needs to respect its own laws. and do something about this. but, every time citizens have brought up the issue of these renegade, passenger vehicles, these commercial vehicles, cap able of carrying eight or more passengers absolutely nothing is done, it is just a quality of life issue. but it is important to people who live in the marina. thank you. >> thank you.
